Mobile outboard mechanic

Neighbor is need of an mobile outboard mechanic.

Older OMC motor 2 stroke on a 20 Wellcraft. When you turn the key it starts and runs WOT. Does not drop to idle.
Any suggestions?

Thank you,

John, those motors are pretty simple, take the cover off, see if the cable cycles competely, then take the carb off and see if the slide or butterfly valve is sticking.carbs get all gunked up from sitting with fuel in them. Not sure if thers a timing advance trigger on the omc's but that's a thing under the flywheel that advanced timing with throttle position. I had a 1997 omc johnson gt 100 on my last boat and it was super simple, tell your neighbor to get the hanes or seloc.

That could be, if there's a air leak into the engine it causes lean run-on condition, which is a really high idle. you can check by spraying carb cleaner all over the front of the engine to se if you can make it come down, you'll see the suction bubbles where it's leaking and the motor will steady out momentarily.

Timing or "air" leak won't send the rpm's to w.o.t. They will raise the idle but not to the point that it is wot. Look at the link arm that connects the carbs and where the roller contacts the cam. Make sure the arm is closing and it should snap back closed when released from holding the carb link arm open.
