boat motor question

i have a 1979 25 foot sport craft that i bought for really cheap. the catch is that it didnt have a motor in it. it had everything else just not the motor. my question is do i have to get a marine motor or can i use my chevy 350 that i have for the boat. im new to the boat scene so any help would be great. thanks for your help.

this is a subject that gets covered pretty often around here...do a seach and it will bring up posts....you need a maranized motor which includes safety features built into several parts and which are approved for marine use from authorities such as Coast Guard, etc.etc.; there are also design variations used in a marine engine vs automotive

Boltman is correct but I would add the long block is the generally very much the same same except for camming it (has to do with where the torque band is and the amount of overlap), freeze plugs and gaskets.

Depending on what your bolting the engine to will determine things like the flywheel etc.

Yes, you need a marinized motor... or you might hear a loud boom and find yourself in big trouble. Plus auto engines and boat engines are designed to run differently (rpm's, etc.). Good luck.
