yamaha t8 won't crank

I have an 05 yamaha T8 with both electric and manual start.

Last fishing trip, hit the electric button on the motor and nothing...not even a click like it was trying.

Manual pull start works just fine, so the trip wasn't a loss.

Got it home, checked that I have power, and I do.

Any suggestions????

Only diagnosis is that the positive cable looks like it goes into a relay. Forward connection has constant power, rear has no power. When I hit the start button, I would assume I should have power to the rear connection as that looks like it goes to power the starter.

Any other way to test this relay with resistance before I start throwing parts at it???

Thanks in advance.

Good point above as manually I will believe it will start in gear. I had the same problem with mine and switchbait.com has a great mechanic. You can check power at the starter and work your way through. I had this weird problem where the tilt indicator flowed through and it was defective. Through out the tilt indicator and installed a flowscan. You can grab the wiring schematic at switchbait and troubleshoot yourself. Hopefully something simple.

get the manual. troubleshooting should be helpful or sometimes you can view the manual through the yamaha website.

As far as I know I was in neutral. Pull starting for the first time, the idle was high to warm up and I wasn't going anywhere. I'd assume if in gear, I definately would have noticed.

Definately not in gear. Just checked. If I jumper the relay I can get the starter to crank. Now it's a matter of finding out if it's the switch or the relay.

One of those terminals on the relay is the power coming from the switch. Find which one and put 12 volts to it to check the relay. If it cranks that way then check for voltage into the switch and out of the switch when you hit the button. Then you'll know which part is bad or if you have some wiring work to do.

Check the ground cable, I have a Yamaha that would not start. I Checked the ground cable and verified it was tight still would not start. I then tightened it some more and verified it was a bad ground connection eventhough cable was properly tightened.
