Maybe I'm missing something here. The most critical thing in my mind (before you start messing with the props) is to reach max RPM's as per your engine specs at WOT. It sounds like your seatrial did not have a functioning tach. I would take a step back.......get an accurate RPM at WOT. Ideally you would want 100-150+ over your rated spec Max rpm to take into account the added weight you will be adding to the boat (full fuel, ice, bait tank, gear, passengers, etc). Far more important than top end speed in terms of long term engine life, I would think.

What you are not taking into account is the engine 'puter has a built in rev limiter set to 4200 rpm. Cummins knows what they are doing. They say you can "Cruise" at 200 rpm below that for ever. Like I said, I want it to pull the steep faces without having to bump the throttle.
I did not say the tach is fixed already. It was just a switch. I'm trying to get several people to go out this Sunday for the next sea trial. I am trying to get the approximate weight of gear, bait tank, tower and all the other crap that's not on the boat. It's not a river boat but I'm sure it will haul some booty with that diesel. Like I said, the 210 Volvo hit 42 and it could probably go up a size or two.
Just to give you some background. I am a retired Teamster and spent a few years in a diesel shop. I'm pretty familiar with these things. The new ones are amazing. Don't be surprized if you see me pulling a float tube on the way out to the fishy's. Bow up, this thing throws a killer wake.

So its a Merc D-tronics motor not a true "Cummins Diamond" series from the sounds of it. Did you ask around about that power plant? Just curious as you dont see to many boats with that power plant in them. There are a few up in the Santa Barbara area. All Cummins did was put a new lable on the old Mercruiser D-tronics motors. This isnt in any way like the Cummins Diamond series. Thats why the Merc Bravo 3 drive goes with this motor. Mercruiser is the one that came out with the combo a few years ago.

Is this is? http://www.cmdmarine.com/pdfs/18280303.pdf

Good luck with your new boat.

Talking

Try 85% of Redline RPM if you want it to live,

Wow thats alot of RPM. My cummins 6BT's cruise at 2000 RPM and WOT is 2600 RPM in the water.IMO that hi RPM is winding an engine pretty hard to build the torque needed. The Yanmars run at a higher RPM then the Cummins diamond series like i have in my boat, and as of late alot of the Yanmars that see alot of trolling hours have been having cylinder glazing problems.Cummins i am sure has addressed this issue for matching up with an outdrive, since outdrives do require a higher RPM.

Jail Bait is my buddy's Davis. I pull it with my Dodge. = Jail Bait Tow vehicle.

About the "not many seen" part. This is the first boat with this engine combination. Flow-scan had to build a unit for it, and it's due by Friday. The deal between Cummins and Mercury originated in 2002 if memory and the internet serves me correctly. Is the 4200rpm a high rev limit? Not sure but it sounds high to me. Do the engineers at Cummins know a stink load more than a Retired Teamster? Heck yes they do. I'll run the thing around three thousand rpms or less most of the time. My 5.9 Cummins has a 3.2k rev limiter and could do 500k pulling 15k at the rev limiter the entire time. This is a REV limiter, not a true RED LINE. The engineers of these engines do not trust us with a redline. They set is so you can run the engine "topped out" basically forever.
