Eureka, found the problem

Took it into the shop and it took them all of 30 seconds to find my problem. Damn do I feel like a retard. He pulled the wiring harness plug (the one under the cowling, I pulled the one under the center console ) and it was corroded to shit and had water in it. So now I will be taking it in the ass for a new wiring harness and installation.

Have not got the bill yet. Hope I don't get hosed too hard.

pick up some di-electric grease. use it on all your electrical connections and plugs, it will prevent corrosion.

OUCH! I told you to check that plug! That's a very common problem. Oh well at least you'll be up and running again.
I'm glad you got it resolved. :jumpin:

new harness? yea you're getting hosed alright. Especially if this is a newer outboard. shit my 10 year old mercs plug cleaned right up

Tip for the rest of youz, buy some aerokroil! and a small brass detailers brush
(it also comes in gallons) if the plug looks corroded soak it good for 10 minutes all you have to do is put aerokroil in a baggie
and zip tie it to the plug end let it soak presto no more corrosion

on the trailer plug I spray both ends and watch the green corrosion lterally drip right off on contact the terminals are good as new in minutes

It was not an issue of cleaning up the plug. It was so corroded that a couple of the male barb ends broke off. What I want to know is how water got in there? I never hose off the motor inside the cowling. I just wish I could have found the problem earlier before the corrosion got so bad. I'll definitely will be checking that plug periodically from now on. All you other Yamaha owners, I'd check that plug too. Seems like a design flaw if water gets in there somehow.

check it once. fill it with dielectric grease and never worry about it again.
you can buy it at merc dealers as a quicksilver product, again, thats dielectric grese.

You can also use that vasoline you keep in the glove box by the porno mags. Basically thats all di-electric grease is, high priced vasoline.Put the vasoline inside the plug every few months and you will never have a problem again.
