Sounds like a timing issue?

Condensation in the distributor cap, maybe a bad rotor and cap?

I know it sounds stupid, but make sure the wires are on the right cylinders. If you mess up the order it will do the pop pop but still run.

I have twin Mercruiser 7.4 liters in my boat and one of my fuel pumps went out. When i was trying to diagnose the problem, I would get on the throttle and right around 3,000 rpm's, I would get a loud pop. Do you have an electronic fuel pump? That is what I have on mine.

I'd replace your fuel filter first since it's the cheapest and eaiset thing to do. I had the same problem last season with some bad gas from a extra fuel tank. Changed out the filter and it was like magic.

Good luck!

Sounds like the muffler bearing is giving out. If it's not that, then sounds like the timing (points) are screwed up.
