OMC outdrive is shot

Hello. I helped a friend/captain from San Jose Del Cabo purchase a 24' skippy flybridge with a 79' Chevy 350 with an OMC cobra outdrive. He recently blew the outdrive.
What would be the easiest/cheapest way for him to get back on the water? Should he have his drive rebuilt? Is there another drive that can be substituted?
Can you recommend a guy in San Diego who works on these drives?
He is willing to transport the drive up here, unless shipping would be an option.
Another option may be to ship a rebuild kit to him.

Just looking for answers for him, as he stays pretty busy chartering!

Thanks!

Billy

the cobra drive is a copy of the volvo drive if i remember correctly. You should be able to do a swap for the entire drive to a volvo pretty easily. And a rebuild kit should be easy to find since volvo still produces parts.

the problem with replacing the outdrive is that you have to replace the bellhousing and the transom assy, and in some cases even the exhaust Y pipe. your best option is to get the outdrive to someone who can rebuild it, that is if the outdrive casing is in good condition if not get a new one; that is the cheapest route... and you cant replace that with a stringer unit. its completley diffrent.. Jaw that outdrive is worth at least $1000 all together.. thats just an advice..

the main problem here is that the old OMC is out dated, out of business and there are no parts for them only used and its not cheap.
