| Radar feedbk on Tuna pins
We were in Ensenada, last week and motored by many tuna pens (Todos Santos and the Coronados).. It was in daylight and I totally brain farted and never turned the radar on to see how they feed back or reflect.
This weekend Dec. 12th-14th Ill get another shot at reading them, but just wondered if anyone here has been close at night an seen how they read out on radar.

The pen in the photo is on the south island of the Coronados and it looks to have reflectors. I did not see any reflectors on the ones inside Todos Santos.

If I can see the no wake bouys in the Mission Bay channel on my old school radar those pens should light up no problem. Of course if you are asleep then that's a different story.

Give them wide berth stay off the Islands...
I shoot the Islands then bend then it back at night full moon or no moon
We never go inside the Island at night most sportboats dont. not worth the risk to save 30 mins in a 50 mile run

| Return Trip
Returned to Ensenada and Todos Santos Island to get a radar readout on the tuna pins there. 1st photo is taken heading north along the inside of the south end of Todos Santos Island and as you can see it looks like a lineup at Winchells Donuts. My radar was set with 1/8 mile rings and as you can see they are easily pickup @ 1/4 mile away. The 2nd photo is looking back south at the pens and Punta Banda. Hope this helps any of you guys that run long and hard down there.

As long as they have radar reflectors they show very well.
However, I've seen several under tow at night that had no reflectors and only showed when they were astern of me and the radar picked up the turbulence of the pen.
I'm pretty good at identifying tow boats at night, and that sure helps, but I would suggest in Mexican waters you assume any radar target is towing and give them a wide berth. I have seen two pens towed at a time [one behind the other]. The length of the tow was 3/4 mile!!
Please be careful out there.

Hell, I've picked up seal fins on the surface with my C80. I cought them far enough away to slow down and confirm what it was. I don't see how you could miss a pen on the screen.

Fishing (hitting) a tuna pen is equivalent to conducting a geology (smashing) study via boat at North Island.
