inboard shaft log question?

Hi i have a twin diesel inboard we took it out on saturday and ran it the first time since repower, here is the deal i can get the shafts to drip any amount i want at rest idleing or off , like 10 drips per minute or more if i want,BUT when im on plane like 18 to 24 mph no drips no matter what i do also while on plane the shaft log nut and locking nut get pretty warm like you can grab them but not long at all ouch! is this normal or What is normal ?? any input would be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance !! Bob.......

No thats doesnt sound good Bob, It sounds like you have regular packing? If at all possible you might have to haul again, but i would install the PSS shaft seals.I have the on my twin diesel and would never consider going back to packing. It is hard to really say with out seeing the boat but you dont want to burn the packing.

Good luck,
Jack

shaft log twin

Thanks again Jack you have been very helpful, the PSS system is under consideration , i heard rumors today reguarding my shaft logs that nomatter what you do as to drip amounts at rest when you are on plane they will not drip at all something about under hull suction?? . Has anyone out there tried to touch their packing nut-lock nut while underway ?? how much heat is acceptable?? Thanks in advance for any help! Bob..........

packing

My packing doesn't drip at all . I was told that you should adjust the stuffing box to drip as least much as possible , run the boat at speed and check the heat . The stuffing box should not be hot , but warm is OK. The ideal situation is to not have any drips , and for the stuffing box not to get hot. Hope this helps you out.
