They are worth nothing (used)except to the owner if they are running correctly. New 150's are 14 grand which is more than his boat is worth by double and then some. This was obviously not the point of his post. How about trying something constructive,
Like this...
Call an expert mechanic (Bruce at Marshall Marine 619-464-6647) who specializes in making these motors run perfect. I have the same motor that has NEVER let me down off shore in 17 years. He did my carbs and they are perfect. Starts every time and gets better mileage now too.
Like previously mentioned above, don't try it yourself. This would be a mistake. My .02
Repowering this boat= buying a different boat.
Just fix it and go fishing.

I said sell it because mine did the same thing and that was how I fixed my problem. I was being constructive and realistic at the same time. Skip's force runs great, might be the only one, lord knows there's parts out there for it. Why does he need a NEW 150? Cheaper options out there. There's your good one

Just didn't want it to be a beat down on the guy like the next guy posting after you. Not here to get in a typing war. And yes, you are correct, he doesn't need a NEW motor. Realistically, I can't think of too many good reasons why someone would be selling a good used outboard motor. It's a great idea if you can find the needle in a hay stack.

Same thing happened to mine (Yes I know I need a new motor) after rebuilding my carbs and fuel pump it seemed to work fine until the other weekend. Drop it into gear, bog out... After looking closer at the carbs I noticed that theres was a damaged (Bent at the tip from being adjusted into the side of the carb) butterfly needle/valve that I need to replace. Part is on order, hopefully this works. Good luck!

I probably put 1500 hrs on my force, it took me all over the bay of la baja, san quintin, ensenada, mulege, countless trips to the islands, when a force is running, they run great, check the insulation stuff, clear the plenum source, you may want to call the guy mentioned earlier to look at your carb set up. And 2x on the comment of the only way your going to get that motor to pay for it self, is to use it, run it till it quits. Vessel assist is a must on any boat/motor anyways.

have vessel assist, have a kicker, and have had many good long trips on this boat. Only 600 hrs, and i know if they are babied they can run much longer. It has good compression and starts right up everytime. I will give all of these ideas a try, without messing with the carbs, and if im still having problems i will take it to bruce. He did some work on my trophy cc 90hp johnson and was reasonably priced and seemed to know his stuff. All i know is ive got about 6 months to get this problem worked out before i start to worry and miss out on some fish . Thanks for everyones input and when i get it fixed ill post something on here letting you know what the problem was.

If that motor has an exh. hose in the upper part of the mid section. It can be cracked and leaking exh. fumes into carbs. when you pull the engine cover fresh air to carbs. The hose is cheap just need three hands to replace. Or the thermostat is stuck open making it run rich at low speed.

If your idle goes down when the cover is in place and nothing is making contact to cause an ilde change then there is probably an exhaust leak below the cowling and the engine is trying to run on "DIRTY" air. ck for leaks at the exhaust hose in the lower cowling.

looked at the linkage and it wasnt even making contact with the linkages that open up the carbs. adjusted that so it idles at 600 and took off all the insulation inside the hood. Problem solved. The insulation in the front of the hood was wet with oil and blocking off most air flow to the carbs. My next question is... can i leave the foam insulation out? Is it there mostly for noise, or should i replace it if maybe it acts as a fire retartant or something. Thanks for all the feedback. if I can make it through this season with this motor it will be replaced next year. Just have too much goin on right now to drop a few k on a motor
