T-Top precision outrigger help

Guys,

I Have a 19 ft whaler with a T-top from pacific yacht towers up in san marcos. I am currently using outrodders to get the lines spread apart and they work ok but I want to get them out further. I Picked up some econoline 12' precision prerigged outriggers and put some aftco clips on them. They came with t top mounts for a total price of $560 at marine exchange in shelter island.

Outriggers

I was trying to figure out how to go about the install and realized that these might no be the best. The mounting base has a 45 degree angle and the pole has a 45 degree angle so if I mount the base facing the stern the pole will be horizontal and pointed aft when running. It kind of gets in the way of the rod holders when deploying it to the side and the two positions it can lock into facing the side are angled up quite a bit so it does not seem to take the line very far out.

Is that the proper way to install them. Seems to me that pointing the bases to the side would give you more spread by making the pole horizontal when trolling and raked back aft at 45 degrees up when running. Does that make sense?

Is there a better option for this price range? Am I on the right track?

Sean

If the bases are set at 45dg. aft, dg. can you set the outriggers in a vertical orientation ( 45dg + 45dg = 90dg ) for running, and in the horizontal position ( level to the water and 90 dg. from the boat ) while trolling? Not sure I totally get the locking position you are describing, but that is , to me, the optimal position for running and trolling. While running or while drifting, anchor, they are up and out of the way, and at trolling they are spread as wide as possible.

Have you tried swapping sides on the mounts?

I thought that outriggers should be pointed up for running and out about 45 degrees for fishing. I have seen some of the newer T-top ones that extend 90 degrees but I bet the fiberglass is made special so they don't snap. If I leave mine out while running they get to bouncing and look like they going to snap off. Come to think about it one did snap once but that is a different story

The mounts are identical so swapping sides shouldn't do anything.

The mounts should be pointed to the side I think so the 45 degree up angle on the mounts coupled with the 45 angle on the rigger poles cancels out in the fishing position and they are paralell with the water oriented horizontally. When running they would be locked vertical. I don't know about these riggers. They may not be the best choice. The lee setup I have seen on the internet appears a bit more robust.

I have the same outriggers on my 20' Shamrock and I have the 15' extra stiffs on my 25' Whaler. I have the side mounts on my Shamrock and the top mounts on my Whaler. They work great. In the running position they should be at a 90 degree, and 45-90 degrees while trolling. Your outriggers should be about 45. If you need any help drag your boat by my house and I'll help you out. I'm in Tierrasanta.
