| Angler Profile: Matt Kobzeff Angler profile Name: Matt Kobzeff Age 37 Hometown: Huntington Beach Any family? Wife and Twin Daughters 6 years old Sponsors? There is a lot of stuff I fish, sometimes boxes will show up with no invoice, but I prefer the flexibility to fish what I want, when I want, plus I am not committed to where the “NASCAR” shirt or even better the “Patch Vest. BASS Favorite place to fish: Tough one, I like 3 different area’s depending on the species. But if I had to choose one it would be Oceanside. Great Calico fishing, good Sand bass Fishing, plus you can still roll inside for some Spottie’s. Any club affiliation ? SWBA Favorite species: Calico Bass What’s your favorite bait for fishing saltwater bass : It would have to be a Spinner bait. You can fish deep Sand Bass, Boiler Rock Calico’s, and Spottie’s without ever retying. It is the most versatile bait out there. What’s your technique for that bait and in what environment : Long Casts into those inaccessible areas that are loaded with Kelp and Grass. Steady grind to the boat… Of the 3 Saltwater bass, what are your personal best fish of the 3 (Spotted, calico, sand)? Calico is 9.6 or close to that. It was in a tourney, and officially weighed, but I don’t remember the exact. Sand Bass is over 8, about 3 weeks ago I caught a spottie that was pushing 3.5 lbs. What about the boat? Or boats, what do you use to get on the water? 18.5 Crestliner CVX Bass. What about tackle? What are your go-to rods, reels and other goods? Shimano Curado on a Crucial Rod, load it up with 40lb spectra and throw a 20lb mono leader, you can pretty much catch any Saltwater bass that swims. Tell us about a memorable trip, Any great, wide open day or just a super fun trip that sticks out in your mind? With my team partner Scott, Palos Verdes 2007 in a Tournament, watching Scott hook and lose 2 fish over 8lbs at the net. We had wolf packs of 3-10lb calico’s chasing our baits all day. Some you would hook, a few we would land, but most would torpedo under the boat. Made me sick. I have never seen giant fish like that local. Then around 11:00am Scott gets a big one to go, I think that one went 9.3, then he stuck a 5 and 4, I don’t know. I am pretty sure he culled most of what I caught. We won the tournament with 23lbs which was cool, but we had a shot at a magic day, 30-35lbs, and just could not finish it. Not sure if in a tournament we will ever see fish like that again, so it sticks out lot’s of highs and lot’s of lows and kind of a lukewarm feeling every time I think about it. Any hobbies other than fishing? Bow Hunting… If you could give one piece of advice to help other guys out there what would it be : Be yourself, what I mean is, find your fish and go catch them. You are always going to be second best if you are trying to get on some else’s bite. Leave the dock talk at the dock. Chasing ghosts gets you nowhere. Be that guy or girl that everyone else is trying to figure out what they are doing. How do you do that? Start with a technique you like, partner it up with the right conditions where that technique performs best, and repeat. Thanks for taking the time to fill out this profile, See Ya.
