We all know this is a marlin destination
does anybody have a story to tell how they have fished for tuna in this strange to me place?????

I am familiar with off shore hunting for dolphin schools
chunking High spots

Have I left anything out besides Greenstick!??

Just wanted to know if there was any real big scores of Cows in Cabo
going to the lusitania bank is a little Far so thats not an option.

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

Bogii, the problem with Cabo has historically been the ever increasing wrappers and longlines. Back in the day, if you fished for cows, you caught them. A 340lber was caught in the CSL bay, literally a stones throw from lovers arch. The Finger and Morgan and where a lot of tuna hunters go, but heading 180 50-80 miles out in porpoise is just as popular, and equally successful. You'll never hear the big scores of big tuna in Cabo because the ones who get em don't want anyone to know. Gordo and Jimmy can be off the hook if there's no pressure, a good current and the wrappers have been away at least a week.

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

Would you fish Gordo the same as El Banco? I am heading there in the morning for a wedding. I am going to get a fish or two in while there of course, I promissed the wife I will be back by 1:00,,,,,,,,,,,,,, as long as fishing is not off the hook, if so all bets are off, he will probibly get married again anyway ;-) Booked a trip w/ Gordo Bank Pangas, most every big boat is fishing the Cabo Billfish Classic. See Y'all in PV on Tues!!

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

Here on the Gulf Coast we cast rigged Frenzy flying fish and poppers to the tuna. We rig the flyers by fastening a circle hook to the top of the bait via rigging wire then attach a water cork up the line so that it can be cast. We also catch a lot of fish on jigs. A couple of years ago I caught a good tuna on a spro swim jig in PV.

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

got a 240 lber a few years back there at the Jaime bank. Trip started out looking for marlin but instead the tuna were there. Went 1 for 3 on the vacas. If conditions are good check out the area around the Jaime and Golden Banks. We slow trolled big macks back and forth between the two banks and got lucky they were there. Good luck

Yes but just pretend you are hooked on the bottom as the word of a big tuna will likely lead to up close and personal with about 200 of your closest boating buddies

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

I am days away from launching my totally redone 31bertram here in Cabo and I will be fishing the tuna hard since I'm not big on the marlin fishing.
Drew's right about the tight lips from most of the hardcore guys that fish for the cow Yellow Fin Tuna down here. They just don't talk much about it. I have caught some nice size tuna around here over the years, mostly just getting lucky in finding a school that was up and being the first boat on the scene.
Several years ago I had my 22ft Baja terminator down here and the Royal Polaris was anchored out at the Jame for like 5 days without moving. They didn't seem to be catching anything during the day and all these charter boats were trolling all around them not getting a thing but I knew those LR guys wouldn't be there if they were not getting any nice size tuna. I happened to be driving back to san diego that week and saw them unload there catch and was amazed at all the big Yellow Fin Tuna they had on board. They were getting most of there fish between 3:00 and 8:00 am and on Squid.
Most of the big tuna I have got down here are full of squid and the big ones don't seem to come up as often. The Kite can work really well but I feel like downriggers with big baits can work really good also. I'm going to be doing some over night crew trips to the lower ridge this fall and winter and will try big baits down deep. I have 6 tuna tubes and 2 bait tanks so I plan to try everything until I find what works.
If any of you hardcore tuna heads are down this way please look me up. I love to talk tuna. My slip will be right in front of puerto paraiso mall on D dock. My boat is a charter but I will be fishing the fuck out of it when ever I can. I plan on taking the boat down to PV next sept for a week or so and hope to meet some of you tuna heads. PV is definitely cow town and I plan on crashing the party. The upcoming tuna tourney is geat fun and I hope to meet more tuna heads this year. After fishing longrange for years I will finally get some tuna that count.

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

I've caught big ones on skipjack chunk on the outer gordo late Oct Bogii.

The high spot there is very shallow, and they reponded quickly to the chunk making several drifts over the same spot.

Re: Fishing Cows In Cabo?

Bogii,
Good luck this weekend dude.......if you don't score offshore, I know you will score onshore. Pissed I can't make the trip......

For 50 - 80lb tune: I have had a lot of success on the outer gordo, especially if you can get some of the bullet tuna. If not, run into Palmilla to get a boat load of sardines, as you can chum them up pretty good but you need alot of bait.

For cows in Cabo, I have no experience but I want to hear your stories when you get back.....Good Luck.
