Mex navy ordeal

Heres the black & white: A boat was stopped for a routine inspection, the required papers were not on board (permits for boat & skip) , Navy allowed a boat to bring papers out....(Papers found in order, exept skippers license)....there were still ID issues, navy decides to take the whole show to Ensenada and turn over to Proper Authorities...(Port Capt.) boat being towed sinks in route. Upon arrival after routine phys exam and declaration, all are released.
At this moment EVERY skipper here in San Quintin ,commercial & sport who do not already have their Permit/License are in Ensenada Taking the proper courses for their "ticket" (Including 2 of my sons). I know eveyone will be making sure all their papers are in order and up to par, No one here wants this to happen again. Just like in the USA there are rules and regs for vessels at sea and i know that if your boat gets boarded by Homeland Security and you dont have your vessel permits or correct ID......you will probably get escorted too.

Re: Mex navy ordeal

I heard the American anglers lost some valuable fishing gear. Will the Mexican authorities be replacing that equipment?

If an incident happened in the U.S. like this with Homeland Security, and tackle was lost by some foreign anglers, do you really think they'd have any chance of getting shiny new gear up here either? I suspect this is one you or anyone would file under their home-owners insurance policy and hope for the best.

I called Allstate this morning regarding stolen fishing gear, should it happen, on two upcoming int'l trips. They said that it's covered up to the value of my policy. That doesn't help while on-location but provides a slight amount of comfort. I realize that doesn't help the boat owner in this situation but if there was an incident in the U.S. like this (and lets not be so naive to think it couldn't happen here...) the pass-the-buck methods of the gov't would make it all but impossible to acquire new tackle on someone elses tab.

Re: Mex navy ordeal

Kelly, thanks for the heads up on what really happened. A lesson to be learned for everyone else. We have fished out of SQ for 20 years on my own boat and never been checked for boat permit and licenses and always had them. We will now have passports/FM-3's etc. aboard. Too bad for the loss of gear and vessel. At lease everyone is safe.

Re: Mex navy ordeal

Kelly - I have always made sure everyone on my boat has a valid Mex. fishing Lic. and I have a Mex. boat permit for the year but I havenever been concerned about me our my friends having our passports or tourist permits with us on the water. Was this part of the problem?

YES... I would expect dept. of Homeland Security to replace it, and I think they would. When I was stopped about 3 years ago by that 39' Midnight Express (they have many now), and they wanted to board, they threw out bumpers and came along side. Bumpers didn't line up, a swell caught the side of their boat, slammed them into my SS rail, antenna, pulled out fiberglass, etc. 9 months later, after filing claim, they paid.

Was this an attempt to excuse Standard Operating Procedures in Mexico?
