YellowTail Tournament

May 17, 2004

LA BAY YellowTail report for the past 3 days.

Guillermo and I just got off the phone, he reports that the YellowTail have arrived just in time for the TOURNAMENT. Guillermo states that YellowTails are at the inner islands (CHART) being taken on the slow troll with rapallas (and clones), on the bottom with live bait, on the surface with fly-lined bait, and with irons. Bait is plentiful and active, the birds beginning to work them. On Saturday, Guillermo reported taking limits for 5, then catch and release, (additional limits of GROUPER). Yesterday he took two customers out for limits and was back at the ramp by 930, with the same true for today.. Water Temperatures are rising, all the signs point to a GREAT TOURNAMENT.

YellowTails are running to 20 pounds...

I'm going to LA BAY for GUILLERMOS YELLOWTAIL TOURNAMENT

go to www.guillermos.com for information.

Sounds good, when is the tournament... also hows the Gas / Diesel situation???

I know there are the suicide guys with the 50 gal drums at Catavinia and at the turn off. Was wondering if they had a better source down at the bay?

fuel and dates

Fuel prices are the same as last few months.. MISUSE any help....? I hear someting like 150 Pesos for 20 liters...(is that 2.50-3.00 a gallon?)

Last station is at El Rosario,, 160 miles from the Bay,,, fuel from the locals at above prices...

Tournament is last weekend of the month,, bring your bait rigs and lures.. Read more at Guillermos web site... May 29 and 30 .... (sat and sunday.. margaritas afternoons and evenings.. ..) This is typically when the Yellowtail season starts again. the Yellowtail disapear for about 45 days each year for some reason then show up in the second or third week of May each year. There are always Yellowtail in the depths if you know how to lure then up (and where).

Guillermo said he would have extra fuel in town for the weekend ... (they will need it anyway for the upcoming season.

yeah fluctuates from $2.50-$3.00 a gallon. Buy the "Magna" "verde" and add "top oil" octane boost... Gas ain't cheap down there. Kep and I burned anywhere from $45-$85 a day on a normal inshore run.

4 quarts= 1 gallon. Exchange rate was $1.00US = $111pesos.

For anyone fishing the tournament...I will post a report after my trip this weekend. If I find any hot-spots..I'll let you know. By the way...there are some LA Bay locals/regulars that are "ringers" for that tournament that seem to be in the money every year. It is tough to beat that local knowledge.
