A 30# outfit was my heaviest, but used mostly 20# on the tuna @ Tuna hole. Roosters from Panga would be cool. When you check in the night before go over detials w/ Hermon on whats and where is good. Bottom line you'll be catching.

Like BrokenSeal sed, no need for too big of stuff. We killed Yellow Fin Tuna and all I had was my 20# rig. See pic on my signature.
If you want marlin you can bring some heavier stuff or just use theirs. The stripers are usually in the 100 to 200 pound range. Personally, I'd rather have a bunch of Yellow Fin Tuna or Dodos, but if you never caught a marlin you have to do it as well.
Great place as well. When we pulled in we gave a fish to the poolside cheif and he made some awesome ceviche' and sushimi while we were still high-fiving in the pool with a cold one.
Love that place. Have fun and take lots of pics.

Thanks guys. I caught marlin several years ago so no need for that. My girlfriend says its all about the dorado. We both love the ahi. She might want to catch a striper just for the pics but I am bringing an ice chest. Beer down, fish back home. Can they vacuum seal fish at PdC?

I'll be right down the road @ punta from the 1st to 7th. We'll be burning up the same waters. I concur with all of the above. I go down gunned up, depending on the boat you may get great gear or sunburned rods/reels. yup, 20's/30's for 95% of the fishing. The dodos are the hot bite in town right now, you can target them specifically but you'll pull them in from time to time while trolling the marlin jigs. The reef fish are going pretty good right now as well, tady/sumo/salas jigs will grab nice amberjack to 100lbs as well as pargo(tastes like lobster) and other assorted bottom dwellers. Blue marlin haven't made their appearance yet but it's only a matter of time, if they're in town you'll wish you had a bigger rig. I'll also take a large surfcast rig to chuck hydro tigers etc for roosters and jacks as, 8hrs on the water doesn't seem to quench my daily thirst. You can have your catch smoked or packed, not sure if the hotel does this onsite or if they employ a local resource. Anyways I've been known to maybe stop in up there for a swim up cool daddy, if I do show just look for a sunburned clown 6'4" and about 255lbs. Good luck!!!
Jim
PS - you'll need a couple hundred in cash for bait/tips etc and I always close out my bar tab at the end of the day. It can get fairly loose w/ people buying rounds and charging them to any old room.

Can they vacuum seal fish at PdC? | According to East cape smoke house they are really baggen the tuna and the dorado.fiqures out to about 2 fish per angler.I have never used the hotels to package my fish,no particular reason.I used East Cape Smoke House the smokeing and packageing. All ways had good luck with them.No Affileation. They are not cheap.I dont recall what they charge, you can go to their web site East Cape Smoke House .com.Try smokeing some of your Dorado ,its great stuff. Before you send your fish up to the smoke house make sure you have the guys on the boat fillete the fish other wise it cost more good luck

I was in Los Barriles last week. I can promise, the tuna fishing WASN'T good, between the 3 hotels we went to, I saw one tuna flag. We got the big Tuna skunk two days in a row. Hopefully that has changed now, but it was SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW last week. 3 marlin, 9 guys, 2 days. Thats all.

Just got back from Rancho Leonero. Palmas is nicer. We fished 3 days (1 day rough), for 2 stripers, 2 blue marlin (1st 2 of the season I might add apparently), and 2 dorado.
We used 40# standup and the last fish was a 200-220# blue I released - took 2 hours and nearly killed me. I started suffering heat exhausstion at the end. I had to give up the rod belt (no harness) after an hour and use the chair. I would recommend 40-50# and LX-2s. The bigger fish are arriving. If I had the trip to do over I would have used my Pro-30 with 50# for live baiting - overkill for the stripers but necessary for blues as the summer wears on.

Thanks. It's really hard to tell the diff between the smaller blues and the stripers. Only way I know is the shorter dorsal on the blue. But I figure the captains down there fish 10,000 days/year and if they say "That is a blue marlin senior, first of the year for the cape" then they know what they are talking about. I'll post some pics later.
