Fishermens Fleet La Paz report 5/29

The offshore fishing is starting to coagulate, with some very nice, but inconsistent dorado catches on the buoys, and marlin regularly, but not every day. While we wait for that to snap into focus, the inshore fishing is exploding. Cubera snapper, known to many as "Dogs", have shown up in earnest, with big ones being hooked daily. Sometimes it's just a bad case of machaca thumb and some horribly mutilated line, but sometimes, with skill, practice, and cosmic assistance come some living trophies. The picture above of Leland X. Daigle and his trophy from yesterday proves that his karma was good, and his zen a pumpin' as he mastered this 55 pounder. Not enough you say?

How about several hundred mullet snapper, some in the 40 pound class, boiling on anything sardinelike at Roca Traversada? 40 pound fluoro, #1 hook, and hang on. Tom Holtzman sure did, as his intimate relationship with this pargo liso will attest. Still not convinced?

Wahoo. That's John Dorr hiding behind a big one. 4 fish in the boat days are not uncommon, and quite a few strikes that result in line only. Marauders, Rapala's, Mirrolure deep divers, it doesn't seem to matter. The bite is best first thing, and then again in the afternoon, and if you can keep the mono out of their mouths, you get to put them in yours. Startin' to convince you just a little?

Roosters, big ones, are prowling the points and beaches. El Vernesto, know to you Bloodydeckers as VernAk scored this big cock using ladyfish at Punta Perico. That should do the trick, and then there are the amberjack quite plentiful at the south point. The coolest thing of all is that these fish are all within a few miles of each other. You do not have to choose one, go get 'em all. It's kinda like when the lady says, "You want pie or cake?" The answer is "yes". We will get back offshore, but how do you expect fishermen to pass over all of this to get outside. The weather is warm without being too hot, and the track if fast. This is what La Paz can be when all the tumblers drop into place, and it's a blast.

I thought that you'd like the update, if patterns prevail it's gonna get better yet. About the wood, I'll leave that to you to address.

Re: Fishermens Fleet La Paz report 5/29

Scrinch,
You are correct....that dog is heavier.....32 kilos....that is my partner....there were so many in the 40 to 55 class that it was hard to keep track....another nice bunch today...3 to 4 to a boat on 80 to 150 line....
I used the Melville/Archer Upriggers for the second time and it has changed panga fishing for the better....especially on wahoo and tuna....2/3 of our wahoo were taken withing 40 feet of the boat on Mauraders.....trolled on flat lines from Uprigger....

We saw a few marlin and a couple nice dorado in the bouys today but we were looking for an elusive tuna school....

Mooner....I hope you have as good a trip as I have enjoyed....back to AK tomorrow...

Re: Fishermens Fleet La Paz report 5/29

I get so tired of seeing 20 lb. fish held up on a straight arm with the caption of a "40 lb. farfle grouper" that we take 10% off of the estimated weight to insure that we aren't exaggerating. I would echo Vernons' kudos to the Melville/Archer system. After you get used to the new drill, they provide a lot more flexibility than the standard two rod set up in pangas, you can actually get a spread out of different lures, and at different depths. Not just limited to pangas, we use them on our cruisers upon occaision and they offer a lot more flexibility in settin' up the spread. Things are comin' in a little differently this year, but different ain't bad. Thanks Vern.

Re: Fishermens Fleet La Paz report 5/29

Senor Shipper,
While I don't have a picture of the upriggers in action on a panga, I do have this snap which shows them in use on a cruiser. The shadowy figure at the helm is none other than the inventor Capt. Bob Melville, and at the ready is his far better half Chris, if I dont' miss my guess. These are, by my way of thinking, the best kind of design,
simple
effective
solve more problems than they cause
they work.
Capt. Bob visits here now and then and you can probably find him around. He and Fred are a little difficult to find, but it's worth it.
