I haven't caught a fish for about 6 months and my freezer was complaining, so when a few friends decided to go south for some bottom fishing I couldn't wait. We picked some days that looked good on the moon and tide chart and booked our room. The only problem is that you can't always pick your weather, so we were a little worried as it was raining and windy most of the trip down and throughout the night. The first morning brought some clear skies and no wind however and we were in the boat and fishing by 6:30 a.m.. We went about 12 miles out to some high spots and immediately started cranking up some nice sized reds until the giant squid showed up and started eating everything that hit the water. We moved away from the squid and found a nice spot that quickly turned into wide open stupid fishing for rock cod. We fished with ganions and fresh squid bait, plastics with heavy lead heads and iron. It didn't really matter what you used. The cooler was filling up fast with reds so the captain moved us to a spot for a try at some ling cod. As promised, first drop brings up a nice ling (no tape measure needed for a change) that was an easy 8 lbs. Then another, then another, each one as big or bigger than the first. We ended the day with a load of reds to 6lbs., lings to 10lbs. and one nice cow cod, along with a few whitefish and the occasional giant squid. The second day was basically a shortened version of the first minus the ling cod spot and with incredibly flat calm, sunny conditions. We were back by 1 p.m., cleaned and packed everything and on our way home by 3. My freezer is happy and I got rid of the fishing cobwebs that have been collecting for a while now...
