| Re: Tackle for Colnett
Teddfish,
I've gone two times in the last month to Colnett aboard the Apollo.
What the above members have relayed is correct.
Specifics (what has worked for me & was recommended by the boat)
Weights: 12ozs, 14 ozs and 1lb weights. Bring plenty (you will hangup many times, so 3 or 4 EACH is not excessive). They are drastically cheaper at your local fishing stores. (I paid $2.50+/- for 1lb at Angler's Choice)
Swivels: heavy duty type.
Ganions: Avoid the pre-made $1.20 crap. To many things wrong with it. I would suggest making them yourself, as other members have previously stated. If possible, use a weaker freshwater swivel for the weights so that you can hopefully recover some of your rig when you snag.
Yellowtail Lures: heaviest as possible, though the Jr. size Salas 6x worked well for many of us on the boat both times (scrambled egg pattern & blue/white as well as mint).
Ling lures: the big heavy red or orange ones (don't know make...Jax?)
Bait: Gulp, 3inch and 6 inch shrimp worked great for the Vermillions, and occasional Ling that fell for it.
Hooks: No less than a 5/0. To give you perspective, I used a 9/0 and increased my strike ratio on the sardines (the dines were humongous). If they have chovies, then obviously a smaller hook is preferable...but be prepared to catch much more of the less desirable whitefish.
Side note: on both trips, many did well using the Butterfly system. In addition, many swore that the cod flies on their ganions increased their hookup ratio. I am a little doubtful, as pretty much any bait was getting hammered. Sardines on a long loop or spider hitch worked better for ling
of course.
No more than 2 hooks allowed on ganions, and besides, you wouldn't want more than that anyway.
Good luck to you. Once again this was what worked for me succesfully.
