Puertocitos fishing in December...

headed somewhere south after xmas, usually BOLA, but thought I might change things up since I'll be hauling the new pup (DVD works for the kids, but could be a long trip for the new dog). Was considering Puertocitos for some camping, hopefully close to or on the beach, haven't been there before. Any quotes on whether pangas would available that time of year, cost (the usual 120?) and what targeted species might be ? Also, is there petrol and market supplies (ice) available ? Thanks all, hope everyone is psyched for the holiday season .....

Any other ideas for places ? The wife is a skinny chick and gets cold so we usually stick to the cortez side for the winter months ...

Re: Puertocitos fishing in December...

I was in Puertocitos a couple of Thanksgivings ago. I doubt little has changed. No gas in town, get it in San Felipe. There are stores for ice and the other essentials. We camped near the hot springs, cabanas and water available, like $10.00 a night. No pangas available, but I did read a post in this forum of a gentlemen opening a motel and guide service just south of town. It can get real windy at that time of year, take warm clothes.
As far as fish, we had luck for bass and triggers from the rocks. Enjoy the trip

No gas, but food, ice and beer are available at the market in town. Just be prepared for wild wind in Dec. PM gonetobaja for fishing arrangements. There are no actual fishing operations in town but you might be able to find someone to take you out if you ask around.

Camp a few miles south of town. There are lots of coves with nice spots. Take a kayak, a longboard or even a float tube. Lots of fish (millions of spotted bay bass, triggerfish, cabrilla, corvina, sculpin, etc.) can be caught within 100 feet of shore. They'll eat just about anything. I'd be sure to have some frozen squid, some plastics and some Krocodiles. Just be very careful as the wind can kick up really fast.

Here are some pics from last week in Puertecitos. I was going to post up a trip report but after I got it all typed out I accidentaly erased it (cause Im smart like that...) I was too lazy to type it up again. Here is the short of it with some pics.

Day 1 we fish the shore with a small zodiac. My buddy eric nails a massive trigger and we get nice fillets for dinner. After thanksgiving we went to the islands the next day. There are alot of yellow snapper out right now.

The palapas are for rent for 15 bucks per night. They come with a BBQ and a trash can. Also we have flushing toilets (ladys like mucho). A panga can be had in town for 250 if you want to go out in an unlicenced boat. We have a boat in town, 22ft will fish 3 people for 500 per day. It has a 350 I/O duo prop and cruises at 30. You can find the 250 dollar panga by calling on Channel 9 asking for Benjamin. The 500 dollar boat you can get by sending me a pm. We had a great trip ther are alot of Yellow snapper around right now.

The campo is called Playa Escondida, it is the first campo before the entrance to town. It is on the east side of the road and is marked by a painted panga. It says Playa Escondida, Octavios Camp. The best place in the area.
