| Hotel Buena Vista or Palmas de Cortez?
Planning my first East Cape trip for next June and have it narrowed down to these two locations. Plan is to stay for 5 days and fish 3 days on a 28' cruiser with one other person. Anybody have a strong opinion about one vs the other? They appear to have similar accomodations and are very close to each other. Price for the entire trip is within $100 of each other so that is not a factor for me.
Thanks,
Steve

I wouldn't stay at either Palmas or Hotel Buena Vista. I prefer RANCHO BUENA VISTA, not to be confused with Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort. By far, the Rancho Buena Vista skippers are the best I've ran into, collectively at least. There's some individual skippers like Alonzo who runs the Bohemia at Punta Colorada who is awesome, as well as Arigo who works for the local hotels on his boat, the Patricia.
But for a long day on the water, you can't go wrong with Rancho Buena Vista.

Do a search as this has been asked before. Palmas is the closet thing to a Cabo resort if that's what you want or your family is with you. Fuck booking a boat from the resorts, you need to get a quality skipper referred from a friend that has used him before. My experience with a lot of these guys is you are only a fish winder. They decide what to fish for, where to fish, what bait, cut your terminal tackle off and retie and after the hook is set hand off to you no matter you discuss before. Basically you pay, they fish. There are good guides/skippers down there but do your homework first.

I've been fishing on the East Cape since 1974 and have stayed at or been to all the resorts...you have IMO chosen the last two that I would go to....I concurr that my first choice would be Rancho Buena Vista next would be Rancho Leonardo.
PM me if you want details....

| Re: Hotel Buena Vista or Palmas de Cortez? I CONCURE WITH AFRE, I FOUND IT HARD TO WORK WITH THE CAPTAINS AS TO THE USE OF YOUR LURES AND TARGETED FISH. THEY MAY PUT YOU ON THE EASIEST FOUND FISH, TUNA OR DORADO. TO GET YOU FISH AND TO FLY THEIR FLAGS. TARKETING THE MARLIN IS A LITTLE MORE WORK FOR THEM AS THEY HAVE TO PITCH THE BAIT TO THEM SINCE YOU ARE JUST HANDED THE ROD AFTER THE HOOKUP TO WIND DOWN ON THE FISH. THEY ARE NOT KEEN ON YOUR INSTRUCTIONS, LURES, CIRCLE HOOKS, TEASERS OR DOWN RIGGERS. HOWEVER, THEY DO LIKE MY SHIMANO #30 2-SPEED, SPECTRA BACKED, FLUOR LEADER FOR WHICH THEY HAVE USED FOR MY PITCH BACKS OVER ONE OF THEIR RIGS FOR THE LAST 5 STRIPE MARLINS. BY PASS PALMAS DE CORTEZ AND HOTEL UENA VISTA! |

Got it Gentlemen, loud an clear I actually did a search on the net after posting here and heard way too many horror stories. I knew that I could get some real info here and was not let down.....thanks. I have a VM into Rancho Leonero right now to check availability and will PM some of you that responded for any info you can pass along regarding specific boats and captains. I definitely plan to have specific reservations before leaving and will not wait and let the hotel decide for me.
Thanks again,
Steve

I'm another vote for Rancho Leonero. Stayed there 4 times and there is no reason try other places. Simply put, it is the best place on earth! I usually go down there for 5 days. Kayak fish for 1 day and hire a super crusier for another 3 days. Rancho L is way off the beaten path, super clean, nice pool, bar, food is included, and awesome panga captains. They pick you up at the Los Cabos Airport too, so make sure you tell them when you are arriving. Hoping to get back down there soon. good luck.-dave
