Campo Archelon in BOLA?

Has anyone stayed at Campo Archelon in LA Bay or have any comments on it? They do not have a website i could find except for a ToBook company that does its reservation bookings. http://baja-california.campo-archelo...date=7/27/2006

I have a problem giving a foreign company I know nothing about my credit card # to make a reservation. Campo Archelon is owned and run by that famous green turtle preservationist guy. Many moons ago I use camp a stones throw away. Being close to town but outside of town had its avantages back then.

Any info would be appreciated.

HH

Now that Camp Gecko is closed Doc recommends Archelon or Daggets. Good luck, I would be looking for something with AC at this time of year, unless of course you have that in the coach

Re: Campo Archelon in BOLA?

I'm heading down to BOLA tomorrow. Reservations are always so-so down there. I've arrived only to find my "reservation" is not around, or my boat is taken...etc. It happens. Daggetts is good, Camp Diaz is OK as is Guillermo's (spelling) who has AC. Larry and Rachel also run a decent Motel right next door to Daggetts and they also rent a couple of houses right on the sea of Cortez for $90 a night or so. There is also Casa Del Sol right in town which is nicer quality but off the water. Best thing to do is high tail it out of town early enough (I leave no later than 6 AM) and first thing you do when you arrive is secure a place to hang your hat, then immediately find a boat to take you fishing. I've fished them all..I'll probably head over to Diaz, rent a cabin for $35...very rustic, bring a sleeping bag and your own can of lysol.. Archelon is well off the beaten path...PM me with any questions. I'm gonna be there Sat afternoon leaving for SD Tues AM....I might try and get someone to boat me up to San Franciscito..but if I'm in town, look me up, I'm in a Blue Dodge Ram.

Re: Campo Archelon in BOLA?

About 6 of us go camping every March for two weeks and tow a boat with us. I'm towing my 21' Cabo down this coming March. We bring just about everything we need with us. We're looking to have a rustic cabin or two to get out of the winds if they pick up. want to stay out of town. That's why Campo Archelon intrigues me so.

Yolo if you could check out Archelon while you are down there I'm sure I could get the fish gods to shine favorably upon you.

Thanks,
HH

Re: Campo Archelon in BOLA?

I have never seen anyone camping at Archelons. I didn't even know it was a camp. I thought they just cared for sea turtles. I usually stay just up from there at Daggett's and launch at Guillermos.

With Doc closing up shop Daggetts would be my second choice.

Re: Campo Archelon in BOLA?

Ive stayed at archelon for the past 20 plus years, Super Tony and Betty are very nice and the camp boasts 8 palapas on the beach, most with nice rock walls blocking prevailing winds, there are three cabing for rent and two other palapas off the beach. There are running showers and flushing toilets, but you bring the rest. They provide cots to sleep on if you can handle being outside. This camp is a little quieter and more family like... Antonio isn't a fan of late night parties and direspectful music or the likes, but he is a very good person and will treat you well if you do the same. There is a rock /beach launch ramp which works well for smaller boats at all tides. Antonio used to run the sea turtle consertvation program but has now retired to spend more time with his kids. The camp is only 2 miles from town and maybe 3 min. off the new paved road from town. Just go north towards la gringa out of town. the road turns right 90 degrees then left 90 degrees, then take your first or second right and follow signs to Campo Archelon painted in black on a white sign with a turtle skeleton also painted in black. If you want a simple place to stay and to meet some amazing and good peeps, this is the place, its just before Daggets aand L and R's. Tell them Owyn sent yaz.

they have no web site and its first come first serve until the camp fills, which isn't very often... ive had it to myself and Antonio will try to accomidate

Re: Campo Archelon in BOLA?

I've seen Archelon and its as good as any...we ended up arriving on Sat (not good). You should get down on a Thurs or Fri to get a place. Diaz was full, did not go down the road to Daggetts or Larry & Rachels. Ended up at Villa Vetta as it had AC. $65 for a room w/3 beds. Bring a cot if you have 4. Igor out of Gillermos picked apart the first Dodos into BOLA this year on Fri (22) and then Sat (11) by Sun the one area off the Southwest end of the Island was fished out. The slick and sargasso was at least a quarter mile long.

Saw Doc at the checkpoint and at the Gas station in Ensenada. He said it was a full moon and the biggest tide of the year. Said in about 10 days or so it should go off WFO.

We fished on Sun for misc, no dodos, did not go north for deep yellows, hauled tail to SQ and fished there on Tues for 7 Yellowtail, 1 Yellow Fin Tuna, and 1 Dodo...
