STRONG WINDS HAMPER THE BITE BUT DORADO AND MARLIN HAVE ARRIVED - ROOSTERS and PARGO STILL PROWL - AERO CALIFORNIA LATESTS - FOUND A NEW RESTAURANT IN TOWN - PHOTO
WIND SCREWS WITH THE FISH
The good news is that the water is full of potential and promise...two of the most ambiguous words in the world. The bad news...we also had a lot of wind this week. It was not enough to stop the fishing, but it was darned snotty, especially early in the week and not much better as the week went on. We thought the worst was done by now. One day at Las Arenas, it looked like Victory at Sea and I felt badly for the gamer guys who still fished and came back soaked. They caught fish, but it was pretty gutty.
This is transition time. Water on the surface is 80'ish. Our divers, however, say water temps at depth are closer to 60. So, we had a variety of things happening. Dorado are definitely here although not on a full chew as sargasso weeds are building in the channel. The dorado that were caught were smaller chickens, although some 20-30 pound fish were taken and others hooked and lost. Roger Goldwaite from Los Angeles with the Wilderness Unlimited Group fished with Captain Chito and got our big fish of the week...a 47 pound bull.
Still lots of jacks around that ran about 20 pounds and were great on the light tackle. There's still some of those toad 10-15 pound bonito. A few pargo still hanging and some larger roosters were south of Muertos Bay. Kevin Resky and Mike Brown from Orange Co. CA tangled with several monsters using the big giant ladyfish for baits (18-24 inch baits) and got inhaled by fish that even their captain said here "gigantes!" Unfortunately, they couldn't budge the fish from their holes. Still...Most folks are concentrating on the dorado now. Marlin are in the waters too. Several were raised, but none stuff on the hook.
AERO CALIFORNIA
I know I sound like a tired record...underline the word "tired." Aero Cal now says it will not be flying until "at least" June 6th...whatever that means. Things are getting pretty desperate here in town. Hotels are empty as as restaurants, fishing boats, taxis. This has affected thousands of people. I have heard stories of people selling their cars to they could buy food or fathers taking on second or third jobs to make ends meet. One of my skippers told me that by this time last year, he had already done 78 trips. This year he has had 6 so far. We've had hundreds of cancellations as have the other fleets as well. I was in a restaurant the other night...a Friday...and I was the only one there. The only ones who came in were locals. I heard taxi drivers were fighting for clients at the airport and several captains are trying to sell their boats and I've seen several local businesses closing.
On the other hand...there's a little light. Supposedly, a new airline, AVOLAR will start flights this Monday (May 29th) from Tijuana to La Paz. No one is answering the phones yet, but it was in the local paper and we were able to find out the following:
Schedule is Sunday/ Monday/ Friday
Departs 11:30 a.m. and arrives at 2:25 p.m.
Returns: 7:00 p.m. and arrives in Tijuana at 8:05 p.m.
Cost will be great...about $142 ROUND TRIP!
They aren't answering their phones yet. In Mexico the number is: 01-800-021-7000. They have a USA number as well. 1 866 370 4065,
NEW RESTAURANT IN TOWN
Checked out two new places in town recently and was really impressed. Always nice to get new places to eat.
THE DO SAFARI - Brazilian BBQ. Right on the waterfront. All you can eat for 14 bucks! They start with soup and several salads and bread and several great dipping sauces. Then the meat starts arriving...on long swords...one after the other...sirloin...sausage...chicken wrapped in bacon...flank steak...New York steak...nine different meats and they keep coming until you say stop!
CAFE MILANO - Cute low lighting romantic place about a block up from the waterfront built in an old adobe building. Some great pastas. The owner is Italian, but his wife is Vietnamese and she can rock. Best is to just tell her to "create." She jams!
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
They're not full blast yet but no question dorado have moved into the areas. Scott Kendall from Van Nuys CA ripped this nice bull dorado on live bait fishing out of Muertos Bay with Capt. Archangel.
That's my story!
