AERO CAL SHOWING MOVEMENT! - BIG CABRILLA PARGO ROOSTERS CHEWING - MARLIN GETTING READY - FISH REPORTS - PHOTOS OF THE WEEK
Hope you all had a great Mother's Day. Here in Baja, Mom's Day is actually celebrated on May 10th (last Wednesday) and it's the one day...even if you're the rottenest kid in the world...you'd better put up or put out for mom! Restaurants were packed. All kinds of music. Guys were serenading their moms on the streets. Many businesses give all moms the day off. Quite fun. So, I hope you had a good one as well!
Let's get rolling:
CAN IT BE? AERO CAL COMING BACK?
I'm leading off with this because for the first time in 2 months, there might be some reason to be optimistic after getting knocked down so many times by rumors and false reports as well as vague promises by the airline. Also...so many of you have upcoming trips on tap....
Here's what's happened:
1. This week pilots and flight attendants started getting calls to "get ready to come back to work."
2. People could actually be seen working on the planes lined up on the runway and on hangars.
3. Report say that all the Aero Cal fleet are being inspected in a number of cities including La Paz and Guadalajara.
4. Repeated calls to Aero Cal (both in English and Spanish) had them telling us, "We expect to be back in service by May 22 and 23." This is pretty unequivocal. Usually, they just say, "don't call us for another week or two." This was the first time they actually said something about coming back. They would not sell tickets for dates AFTER those dates, but we were told by them that it would take a few days to sort things out and taking care of the people that already had tickets in possession. I have my fingers crossed after so many false hopes so I'll keep you posted!
BIG CABRILLA (Seabass) PLUS PARGO LIGHT IT UP - ROOSTERS PESKY - MARLIN IN THE WINGS!
Everything is warming really fast down here. Couldn't ask for better weather or water. Still a bit of wind in the mornings, but overall temps in the low 90's and water already tickling the 80's and that plankton bloom is burning off. Fishing has been a nice mix of all kinds of stuff. Roosters at Muertos and at Espiritu Santo didn't bite as hard as last week, but boy, they're foaming and it seems like every other day, they go off with fish in the 20-50 pound class. Amberjack near the islands are mixed with some of the largest cabrilla we've had in awhile and 10-15 pound fat cabrilla are not unusual. Pargo are still frustrating guys in the shallows and just off Las Arenas/ Muertos, the marlin are stacked up. They're lazy and don't want to go yet. Pangas are almost running them over before they move, but any day, I bet they go off! Dorado are also starting to move in. Every few days we've had pods of squid float up and getting netted (great bait for dorado and pargo...not to mention they make GREAT calamari! Everyone keeps throwing them away but I love the stuff...breaded, fried, sauteed, calamari salad...) Oh also..Whale sharks have arrived and the divers are having a lot of fun. Basically the ocean is alive right now!
FIRST PERSON REPORTS
From our amigo Ray Burgess who came down with his family. They started with a rough day at Arenas, but rebounded...
"Hello Jonathon,
Just wanted to give you an update on our trip:
As in the past the La Concha provides great accommodations and service, they really know how to cook up your catch du jour.
For the fishing, La Arenas the first day was not good, no bait and one cabrilla on a rapala.
Fish La Paz the next two days REALLY made up for it. First of all we fished Jacks new super panga with Captain Marteen. The boat was sooo nice and Marteen really knew how to get us on the fish.
The first day of fishing La Paz we got 7 or 8 cabrilla I lose count. Several of these being Grande, 20lbs or so. The second day of fishing we got 7 Grande Cabrilla and 1 Grouper. All nice quality fish. Once again Marteen was a really good captain and got us on the fish.
Thanks for another great trip.Best regards, Ray"
PHOTOS:
1. Matt Steele from Boulder CO made his first trip this week and popped this excellent bull dorado near the buoys outside of Muertos Bay with Captain Victor using live bait.
2. Chris Curran from Riverside CA drove the family down and his 7 year-old (Cruz) and 6 year old (Levi) came back with a story to tell... " We were fishing a school of skip jack just to keep the kids busy on a slow day. My six year old son Levi was hooked up on a fish when Cruz (my other son) was bringing up his line and it was hit. Immediately we saw the bill fish breach the surface and bolt. The fight was on. I set his drag for him he was on 40 Lb mono and a live sardine, I knew it would take him sometime to bring the fish to the boat if he didnt lose it first. The fish was underestimated, we predicted it to be a 30 - 40 lb fish. Forty minutes, several breaches, and an air show later one tired 7 year old called color. A worn out bill fish 80-100 lb range was at the side of the boat."
That's my story!
