East Cape Trip 11/6

Spent last week fishing the East Cape area of Baja out of beautiful Palmas de Cortez resort with five other good friends, Mike, Gary, Jeff, Art and Jerry. These were the same guys that I went up to Alaska with two years ago. It sure was fun getting back together with them under much warmer conditions. Here is a picture of the pool area. Very nice resort and operation.

Fished 6 days in a row, two on a cruiser, one from a panga and surf fished each day for an assortment of critters. The best surf fishing was right next to the dock area in the afternoon when you could get live Sardinas from the returning cruisers. The action was wide open when using the live bait on Jack Crevalle, Green Jacks, Pompano, Croakers, Sculpin, Ladyfish, Needlefish and quite a few mystery fish that had no problem cutting through my 15lb test P-Line.

The first trip aboard the cruiser "Jack Daniels" was good fishing for Yellowfin Tuna and Bonito about 36 nautical miles from the resort. Mike, Jerry and I caught all the meat we wanted by 10am. Here is Mike with the jackpot Yellowfin of the day.

I fished the next day with Mike and Art aboard a panga looking for Pargo's but we only caught 2 Whitefish and some kind of reddish fish. It sure sucks not have a fishfinder. Here is a pic of the mystery red colored fish I caught.

Took a ride up to La Paz to check out the Capital of Baja. It had a very nice water-front and seemed pretty clean. The ride to La Paz was very beautiful with millions of yellow, orange and brown Butterflies everywhere up in the mountains.
Here is a pic of Cerralvo Island (way in the distant) taken from up in the mountains, coming back from La Paz.

The second trip aboard the cruiser "Jack Daniels" found us fishing about 12-14 miles off Cerralvo Island for billfish. Both Mike and I caught a Sailfish. Here is a picture of one of the Sailfish starting to jump out of the water.

Gary and Jerry both caught Roosterfish up to 45 pounds while fishing from a Panga. I sure with I could've caught one of those fish. Maybe next time.

Here is a picture of a cove south of Punta Pescadera where Mike and I surf fished the last day. I hooked over a dozen Ladyfish on spoons but could never get one to the beach. Those Ladyfish are one tough fish to keep hooked, thanks to all the friggin' jumping they do once they're hooked.

Here is a picture of the gang on the last day. Vince, Mike, Gary, Jeff, Art and Jerry.

This was my first time at Palmas de Cortez and I know for sure that I'll be back. It's a very nice resort with very good accommodations and good food. I just wish they had fishfinders on their boats. Can't wait to go again.

If you

If you didn't own a boat(s) you would not miss a finder there.
Those guys are very seasoned.
Land marks and conditions are what 90% of them use.
Down in Cabo you'll find gps and a few finders on cruisers.
Most of those 10% do it all the old fashion way by dead recogning, charts, and doing it all thier lives.
Great trip IMO.
Thanks for the low down skinny, get down here for some yellow fin quick!

Once again thanks for a great report with killer pics. I'm a little surprised that you caught a mystery fish, ( you always seem to be able to identify them) are you slippin or what? Thanks again Vince.

Mike...

Thanks for the reply. Even the skipper of the Panga couldn't identify that red critter. He took all our fish to his home for dinner. That poor guy only gets paid $15.00 a day plus tips. ouch!!

Thanks for the report, that place was great fun. Can't wait to go back next year. Mitch still hasn't accidentally driven his boat off a cliff going down the 405 Fwy.
