YELLOWTAIL GETTING BIGGER BUT WINDS ARE A PAIN IN THE COLA - LATEST AIR RATE SPECIALS - PHOTO OF THE WEEK
This is coming from snowy cold Salt Lake City where it's been beautiful but freezing all week as we wrap it up from our last fishing show of the season. We'll be back in La Paz by the time you're reading this. Thanks to all the amigos who have come by to say hi the last 3 months and to all our new friends we've met along the trail.
Now...LET"S GO FISHING!!!! Here's your weekly fishing report...
YELLOWTAIL SLAM JIGS AND BAIT IN BETWEEN WINDS
It was windy enough at least one day this week in La Paz that the port captain had to close down the port for a day, but we were still able to fish at Las Arenas. The winds seem to vary from side to side and they can blow pretty strong. Fortunately, with our fleet of boats on both sides we're able to shift our anglers around so they can get into the fish. Not much change except that it seems the yellowtail are getting bigger. Some 40 pound hogs have been taken the last week and surprise that the famous El Bajo Seamount which can be hit or miss has been a real hot spot north of town. Snapper, cabrilla and some pargo have also been taken and it's often hard to know when the fish are big pargo and big yellowtail because quite a few anglers never get to see the fish losing quite a few into the rocks. I'd say half the fish hooked never get to the boat. It's cold in the mornings...down to the 50's, but it warms nicely by mid-morning.
Sidenote: Still quite a few whales sticking around at Mag Bay. This is pretty late for them. Usually, they're gone by now, but there's still whales to be seen, but diminishing weekly.
Fishing tips: I don't know what's gonna be like in the next few weeks. These winds are pests, but they seem to be dying a bit overall. I"d bring some short rods right now that have some backbone. A lot of fish are willing to eat but we're losing a lot of fish to the rocks! A short rod that can pull is better than a long road you can cast. Also, the yellowtail are eating baits, but heavy yo-yo iron like a Salas 6X Jr., Tady, Sumo, Kicker or similar jig in yellow and green or scrambled egg pattern is da kine! Roosters could show up any day, but nothing yet!

PHOTO OF THE WEEK:
Dr. Bob Simpson from Paso Robles CA and his 13-year-old son, Jake were with us this past week and got blown off Las Arenas, but we switched them to fish La Paz. I'll let Dr. Bob tell it...
". . . we were fishing fools at El Bajo with (Captain Chito) Raul Jr. We boated seven yellow tail (two 30 pounders, two 35 pounders, two 40 pounders, and a 45 pounder). We lost about the same number of fish to the rocks. I almost lost Jake to the 45 pounder but grabbed his belt as he was about to go overboard. We also scored double figure cabrilla and pargo to 8 kilos and 5 kilos respectively. The sea was magical with whales, turtles, and a pod of dolphins that stretched over a mile."
That's my story!
