back at home today, total fish count for our group 11 guys two days fishing 25 yellows with twenty over twentypounds two fish over thirty and a hand full of catchables in the 8 to 15 pound class four pinto bass or cabrilla and a bright orange cabrilla which some are telling me is probably a golden grouper, oh and we also caught a bloody decker and his brother. Loco bro and his bro's panga broke down and we towed them back. Great trip no pics yet the only regret of the trip is not releasing the golden cabrilla our panga capitain has fished in loreto for over forty years and was pretty excited to kill the grouper but in retrospet rare or not that fish did not need to die, I should have spoke up and let the fish go just as if it was a big calico, however I did get the vibe from our capitain that he has killed plenty of them and does so some what regularly and if I did not kill him today some one else would kill him tomarrow none the less the whole deal around that fish has left a sour taste in my mouth hopefully the taste of cabrilla and yellow tonight will help wash it out I will post the pics of my big gold fish when they are emailed to me hopefully then i will get some feed back that does not include a bunch of shit for killing such a awsome fish, Besides loco bro has a story I am sure he will post wich includes an impressive catch which makes him guilty of killing a beautiful fish as well. over all my trip to loreto taught me that bloody deckers are every where and they tend to kill where ever they are.

The orange is only a phase in his life, as he will turn brown again.

Still no pic, However I did some reaserch on this golden Grouper, Yes it is a regular leapard grouper. Born brown but a fraction less than one percent change gold and live gold for the rest of their lives, no one is sure why but other true groupers also do this sort of color morph. The color is found both in males and females. and very few fish have ever been caught with both brown and gold colors. So did I kill a true trophy, am I a piece of shit?
after all even some mexican pageros let them go due to there rarity?
The answer is that yes I am a piece of shit for not knowing what I was killing,
However by killing that one golden grouper I did nothing to the future of golden groupers population because goldens are part of another gene pool and likely two golden grouper would produce only one percent of thier off spring as golden the same as any other two leapords. Given that these fish can live for up two twenty years the fish I killed would have likely been caught several more times assuming each angler who caught it knew what I know now.
The truth is That I like fish, so much more than people, that kiling this fish actually made me feel pretty bad but then it dawned on me that I might be able to help the surviving golden groupers by sharing my expierience.
The moral of the story is know what you are killing so that you can enjoy killing as many as you can and be able to defend youself against tree huggers and enviro's
The truth is that catch rates of all leapard grouper and pinto bass have dropped over the last 20 years and are smaller today than yesterday
I know that commercial fishing is the culprit but teaching the pangeros to conserve will need to be an issue in the future.
I would not have killed my golden grouper if my pangero had not opened the fish box and thrown him in
Of course with his age and expierence that would have been like telling BOB Williams to throw back a 15 inch calico bass, none the less I will not kill another golden if given the opportunity I would hope that this info saves another for me to catch again, besides the regular cabrilla taste just as good!
The pic may lag it is a old guy with the camera but my fish was a smaller specimen around 6-8lbs look up golden grouper "Mycteroperca rosecea" for a quick pic

Quit worrying about killing the golden grouper, unless you waste the meat. I mean, fuck man- OJ killed his wife, and she was beautiful. But look.... there are still lots of hot blondes all over the place. So do we really miss 1 of them?? Nope.
