Smile Avoiding toll road to SQ

Gentlemen,
Can someone please advice me on an alternate route down to SQ? I usualy take the toll road due to lack of knowledge but after reading some of your post, I understand there are better and faster alternatives. Thanks in advance . . .

I always take the toll road down but come back up through Tecate.

The border wait is usually a lot less time. Going north on Hwy 1 just north of the Hotel Coral is the turn off for Hwy 3. & that will take you to the border.

We had a whole 12 minute wait time yesterday.

Re: Avoiding toll road to SQ

You got some bad info dude.

The toll road is the ONLY way to go.

It's only toll until Ensenada.

Then it's free.

Jason; how far is the ride from Tecate to San Diego? Curvy, hilly? Worth it?

If you are towing a boat, it sucks. You cross back over near Julian, and then wind your way back to the 5. I mean, it IS a beautiful drive. But when I am coming home to the 405 fwy, I just want the drive over as fast and easy as possible. I'd rather pay the $5-15 for the toll road, especially if hauling my boat.

It doesn't suck unless your truck is a POS. I would rather go through some windy roads then wait at the border for 2 -2 1/2 hours. I have been coming back that way for the last few years. Like I said, 12 minute wait at the border, even with the extra drive I am sure we beat a lot of guys home.

If you have a diesel there should be no problems pulling any boat that way. You need the torque to get through the mountains and still be able to go over 60mph. We took Harry's Blazer for the ride, took us a little longer to get home cause he has a 350 in it...the trip was a little hard on the truck through the mountains.

Come out near Julian? Huh? Julian is no where near the Tecate crossing.

I think he just came awful close to calling my truck a POS
But, he is correct, we were only in line for 12 minutes or so. I agree, I would rather be driving an extra 20 - 30 minutes instead of a long wait at the regular border drossing. The Tecote crossing comes out on old Rt 94 and is a beautiful drive, even in a POS

Re: Avoiding toll road to SQ

Toll road is a good thing. Coming back, it's all about timing. We came back thru TJ. We waited about 25 minutes. Seemed like longer with a flat tire on the trailer. We changed it in secondary and had 3-4 customs guys come over and bs with us. Some were even on BD!! We left earlier than everyone else because of the holiday weekend.
Harry's truck couldn't have liked the drive up those hills.
