Re: Campo San Nicolas

I haven't been there in a couple of years, but take lots of yo-yo jigs most fish are caught on the yo-yo (normal colors). Also, when the yellows are up, the birdshit 7X works really well. I would definitely take some of the Yozuri Hydro-squirt trolling plugs (looks like a squid shaped Rapala). A lot of times the fish down there are feeding on 12-16" squids and those trolling plugs work really well. You should also take some bigger jigs in brown and white or red and white. A couple of years ago, I had really good surface iron fishing on the redish brown and white Salas 5X.
Most importantly, if you are fishing the yellows on the beach don't hammer your drag (this does not apply at the island). Last time I fished down there, we pulled up on a foamer of 30 - 50 lb yellows and I hooked a 40 - 45 lb fish on the surface iron about 15' from the boat. We were fishing in shallow water (less than 40'), so I had my drag hammered and straightened out the hook on my jig (Salas 7X). The fish were still up, so I grabbed another rod and hooked another big fish and came back with another straightened hook (this time on a Salas 5X). By the time I got a new jig tied on the fish were down. In the meantime, my buddy and the captain landed both of their fish on light line without any problem (twin 38 lbers). Anyway, the lesson I learned is that the fish on the beach are not structure oriented and don't try and break you off (I'm not sure why)... Later in the trip, I caught a 20 lb yellow in 10' of water while fishing cabrilla, the fish never tried to break me off. Cabrilla, on the other hand, will break you off (constantly). Anyway, if you fish at Il Defanso Island, disregard everything I said as those fish go for the rocks every time.
I hope the info helps.
Good Luck.

Re: Campo San Nicolas

I was on the first camp trip. This was my first time, & we had a blast. Great food, great times, and great fishing. First day was the best. The Yellow's were up all day on bird schools, mostly 20lb. fish some up to the low 30's. We fished the surface Iron all day. 7X light on #40. Color dosen't matter when the fish are up as good as they were. We caught with green Swirl, mint, and mint & white. 7 before lunch, 4 more after. Others did equally as well, fishing bait, and Yo-Yo jigs. Second day we had north winds all day. Yellows were up for the first hour or so, then were down for the rest of the day. This gave us time to fish near the beach for Cabrilla. If I could make a suggestion, make sure you bring a bass rod! you can catch plenty of cabrilla trolling Rapalas, and bigger ones. But it's alot more fun catching them tight to the rocks with bass gear and small swim-baits. I caught 3 Yellows in the morning, and 2 in the afternoon, with tons of Cabrilla, and baja junkfish (fun). Final day, no more wind. ran to the island for tuff fishing for our boat. Saw a couple of others get some yoyo & dropper loop yellow's. I caught a 27# Amberjack on the butterfly jig. After not much love we went back to the point and got on a couple of bird schools. Turns out we way over ran the fish. Huge spots up with in a few hundread yards of the tents. 3 boats were on these fish. they were up and down fast, but we all caught fish. These fish were a little better grade. high 20's to low 30's.

All in all we had a great trip. We were able to fish the surface iron the whole trip, but from what I hear that is more the exception than the rule. Take plenty of 7X's, 6xjr's and Christy 2's. Butterfly worked pertty killer, but they are spendy. If I could make a few suggestions, bring a nice sleeping pad, or even better an air matress, the cots are fine, but after 3 days an air matress would have been great. also Rain gear, the weather was great, but when it was windy, we were the only boat that would charge offshore, and not care about the spray. the trip is great You'll love it. If you have any more questions about it pleas feel free to write me an e-mail. rick@wonews.com

Re: Campo San Nicolas

I hate to seem like a dummy, but is San Nick below San Felipe near the Enchanted Islands? or further south? Some road info would be helpful.

Re: Campo San Nicolas

Campo San Nicholas is a beach camp that is 30 miles north of Loreto (in the lee of Punta Pulpito).
It's run by Blue Water Tours and Arturo's Sportfishing during the winter months only.
You can see more at www.bluewatertours.com
It's definitely worth checking out...

Re: Campo San Nicolas

I'm going on the 19th as well. Along with three buddies. We've fished Loreto several times, but this will be our first trip to Campo San Nicolas.
Thanks for the first hand info, Rick. I heard you on Let's Talk Hookup last Saturday. Man, you were excited. It really got me going too.
Was there some bait available? What hook size?
I'll see you down there, Kevin.

Re: Campo San Nicolas

Thanks Andy,

yeah long time, I have been reading your posts, your killing them out there!... we had a great trip.

SAGE For the new jigs. I did like them, but the technique takes quite a bit of getting used to. There is no dout that it works, but so do most things that are "new" just show them somthing they are not used to, and they will probably eat it. The Butterfly jigs sink out very fast, and are great for cod fishing, and such. But Overall I am a fan.
