San Felipe (El Dorado Ranch)

Need some help here! I went to a real estate thing where they are selling house lots in El Dorado Ranch, but I need to hear what the fishing is all about there before even considering it.

Anyone know anything about say Nov to Mar fishing inshore and offshore (if there is such a thing there!)?

Re: San Felipe (El Dorado Ranch)

My personal experience fishing the local San Felipe area both from shore and from my boat on several occasions was pretty dismal. You can get into some corvina, some small yellowfin croakers, but that's about it.

There is a wreck a short ways out of the malecon that holds a few fish. Out by Consag rock, you can get into some triggers and a few other bottom dwellers, but I've yet to catch anything of real substance there. I did see a marlin, laying in the current sunning himself, between the big and small rocks at Consag on one occasion.

The better fishing is south. If you launch from Puertocitos, it's about 18 miles out to the Golden Reef. The Enchanted Islands are well within range from there, too, and you can catch dorado in the summer and troll up some grouper tight to the rocks. Yellowtail around in the winter. Puertocitios is not that far of a drive from San Felipe, but the road (and those that have traveled it will confirm this) is enough to shake the teeth right out of your head, rupture your kidneys, and loosen every nut and bolt on your trailer and boat. You have to take it extremely slow in many places, like 10 mph or less.

I fish out of the opposite side of the Mar all the time at Puerto Penasco. Several decent reefs anywhere from 13 to 50 miles out. In November 2005, we had a day where we trolled and caught dorado, used light spinning tackle to cast lures to skipjack boiling on the surface, then fished the 51 mile reef for catches of a 200 lb. black sea bass, nice red snapper, monster halibut, and a couple of smaller grouper. Did a replay of the same trip in December, minus the dorado and skippies. We also regularly get nice white seabass runs in the late spring.

The biggest problem I had in San Felipe was launching and recovering. I had a 23' Bayrunner at the time. The tides can vary as much as 23 ft. between high and low and the few ramps I found could only be used at high tide. So, that meant launching at 2:30 in the morning (or whenever the high happens to be) in the dark and having to be back on the trailer by 2:30 in the afternoon. There is a harbor, but it's mostly commercial -- it's where the Tony Reyes motherships all depart from for trips to the Midriffs. The ramp there was very steep and just dirt and stone. I didn't even try to launch from it.

This was a few years ago. The situation for launching may have improved somewhat, but I doubt it. And I doubt the fishing is any better in the immediate area. There's just not much structure anywhere in the San Felipe area that holds fish -- pretty much sandy bottom.

Looks like you've got a cat similar to mine, so you would have range to reach some of the better reefs from San Felipe. My best advice would be take a weekend and go down and check out the launching situation for yourself before making any commitments on property.

But if you're willing to go the distance to the 51 or the Golden Reef, the fishing can be superb. It's a 100 mile round trip for me from Penasco and I typically burn 68 gallons there and back.

Hope this helps!

San Feliepe is a great place to enjoy the sunshine and water, bars and discos.. but not to FISH... OR to launch a boat.

Go SOUTH further for any hope of decent fishing.

Re: San Felipe (El Dorado Ranch)

I am a member at El Dorado Ranch and I try to go there several times a year. I agree with fishbert for the most part, the local fishing is limited, especially so from shore. On occasion I have caught some good size corbina, and they are fun. I have caught large triggers, big king mackerel and white sea bass at Consag Rock though. The tidal range is significant and the launch ramps are questionable as stuart said. The ranch is a great place to hang out and relax, the food is good and the prices aren't too steep. I can usually get good accomodations at the ranch as well. Good luck.

Re: San Felipe (El Dorado Ranch)

Russ,

This is off my BlueCharts to give you an idea of how far you have to travel for some decent fishing if you launch in San Felipe.

Golden Reef is 65 miles by route shown; the 51 Mile reef is 63 miles.
