| Guaymas...San Carlos...
I know this is not the right place,, so will someone please move it to where it belongs....
Are you guys up for a real trailer boating adventure?
I spent the weekend driving to San Carlos MX (15 miles north of Guaymas MX) from my new location in Phoenix,AZ. The entire driving time was 8 hours, with 2 hours for food, gas and some paperwork.
The drive was 480 miles, all of it on 4 lanes or more. The roads are not necessarily like the roads in the USA, but are paved without any potholes. (all the way to a launching ramp in San Carlos).
Most of you guys know that I spend many weekends/weeks and days fishing in the many small places in BAJA, my favorite was always BoLA, mostly because you can always find good fishing within 5 miles of the ramp. BoLA also has many of my good baja friends, Guillermo, Igor and some others. BoLA would still be on my list, but now it is too far for driving, and I really want to expand my targeted species.
San Carlos is larger by far then BoLA, and has many advantages. The roads alone make it worth the few extra miles in my opinion. I averaged 60MPH while driving, and would do the same towing the boat. (I left it at home this time).
I basically used this trip for feeling out the place, testing the waters. Here is what I found:
Drive is easy!
Slips are plentiful!
Ramps are in CALM water
Fuel docks
Several options for accommodations.
I wonder how many of you want to attempt a single fishing trip where you have the opportunity (read likelihood) of landing sailfish, marlin, dorado, yellowtail and TUNA in one week!.
Let me go into details.
DRIVE:
Easy, once you know the ropes. The only difficult part is in knowing how to find the truck route across the boarder. The paperwork is not too difficult, you just have to have the proper documentation, and in 3 months this will be removed if you don’t go past Guaymas. Read that as the paperwork becomes easy in 3 months.. the boat permits and car permits are FREE for Sonora, the state where Guaymas and San Carlos are located.
SLIPS/Launching
Easy again. There are two full service marinas,, they launch 50 foot sail boats from one of the ramps that trailer boaters use. The other ramp (second marina) is not as long, but more then adequate for anything we might tow there. Fees… in the first marina about 10 dollars for the ramp (in/out) and 10 dollars a day for 23 foot boat, the second marina, 6 dollars for the ramp (in/out) and 8 dollars a day for the slip. Trailer storage 1 dollar a day. Both marinas have fuel docks.
Accommodations:
If you are like me, you will look for the lower budget clean place.. rooms can be had in hotels from 30 dollars a day up.. (higher end are like true resorts, with things like health clubs, tennis courts, golf,….) I found a source for small houses mixed in the area, 75+ a night (110 a night gets a 3 bedroom 2 bath marble floored ocean view place).. but there is no parking for the boat/trailer (but there is the slip!).
I want to plan a week long adventure in late may or early june… any one interested..
(I will post pictures later tonight.)
