I’m compiling this photo essay for my friend Bill (aka Lawman). These pictures are from last weekend in Ensenada.
Here’s Lawman showing off his trolling technique. Note the donut and coffee in hand as he gets a bendo.
Here’s all the pictures. Most of the bass were caught on Jetty Worms and swimbaits. Lawman’s first person fish report with all the details will follow. Enjoy.
Fished Friday at Estero Beach in the estuary with my son Ian and his friend Dane Lay. The estuary is full of small Halibut. Weather was calm and sunny on Friday. Got bored with halibut so at 2pm we busted out through the surf and up to the Punta Banda Rocks. We tried all my hot spots for nothing. At 3pm I went into the rocky shoreline on the inside for boiler rock action. Tricks-Jetty- Worm in hand I went bendo on the first rock on the fall. For the next one hour it was wide open action with double and tripple hookups on the TJW. Not one fish was under 3 lbs with many going 4 lbs. The kelp surrounding the rocks was deep down under due to a very strong current. That opened up large areas I normally can not get to. On Saturday we worked the same areas and it was a repeat of 3 and 4lb fish. The wind came up in storm like conditions at 11am and drove us off the water. It was the best 4 hours of Calico Bass fishing I have ever had in Ensenada. It was Epic! We fished areas that were virgin territory. The strong current took hundreds of acres of kelp deep and we could access the entire shore line, coves and boiler rocks I had never even seen. Because this was a trip devoted to SBB, we left the bigger rods at home. All the Calico's came on medium tackle. Fish came on the TJW, plastic and the blade. I rarely fish a bait below 10 feet deep. However, I dropped the TJW deep into the kelp, 2 hops and boom, another toad. We were on the bite for a total of 5 hours between the two days. Over 60 bass came over the rails. That is an average of one bass over the rails every 5 minutes. Most of the time one angler had to stay at the helm to keep the boat in position and away from rocks. We fish very tight to the rocks, cliffs and in the surf. We were not able to make it back to Estero Beach into the estuary. It's a very small entrance through the surf. The waves had come up big and my attempt left us beached on a sand bar with trecherous surf pounding us. We were happy to get out of there alive. Had to retrieve the boat at the Coral Hotel and take a taxi to get my Truck & Trailer. The Calico bite is still on down south. I did get some photos. My camera is a piece of junk and was in the malfuntion mode most of the time. I'm ready to go back next weekend for a repeat experience.
Nice report. I love a report with plenty of pictures. I suggest you edit them to come up on the thread. Some people wont bother to click on a lot of links.
