Jonathan Roldan's La Paz/Las Arenas 10/31 Report

DORADO STILL BITE OUR LA PAZ FLEETS - MORE VARIETY FOR LAS ARENAS BUT SLOWER - FISHING REEL PROBLEM AGAIN - NOW BOOKING 2006 - PHOTO GALLERY - PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Amigos: Sorry this is almost a week late, but when I tried to log on from La Paz last weekend, I couldn't get on and found out later the site was down for work. I wasn't going to post this, but several BD'ers told me to still put it up. New report will be out this weekend. Best to ya...JR

LATE SEASON DORADO STILL BENDING RODS FOR LA PAZ FLEET

Despite the late season, the dorado continue to rip it up for our La Paz boats with limits or near limits most days. Still quite a few dink fish, but there's certainly some quality mixed in there too with some 30-40 pound bulls willing to eat the slab or live baits. Sometimes the biggest problem is getting through the punks to the larger fish, but still alot of fun! Marlin, likewise are fewer, but still not surprising to have them also feeding in the dorado schools. The bite isn't far. Still SE corner of Espiritu Santo Island and around Las Cruces and Coyote.

For our Las Arenas boats, it's gotten slower. Somedays, the bite is pretty nice then the next day for no apparent reason, we really have to scratch. However, I can tell the season is changing because there's more variety of warm and cooler water fish available for Las Arenas. In addition to the occasional tuna, dorado and pargo, we're also getting jack crevalle, some yellowtail, amberjack, snapper and cabrilla as well as still some of those giant squid too. However, we're trying to stay flexible for everyone as always. If the bite is better on the La Paz side and you want to switch over, we're keeping the options open so we can keep you on the best bite. Just let us know so we can move you over and upgrade you to the larger boats.

As a sidebar, its really pleasant in town right now. Not many folks around. The weather is an ideal 85 degrees most days and in the cooler 70's at night to the point where we're wearing windbreakers or sweatshirts most mornings! I've actually turned off my air-conditioning. For our divers, waters are still relatively warm...in the low 80's. Better yet, 20-30 foot whalesharks have been around and willing to swim with the snorkellers. For the divers, schools of hammerhead sharks at 60-130 feet have been a kick! As one diver told me, "they were too numerous to count!"

FISHING REELS (AGAIN)

It's like the cockroach that won't die. Bringing reels with line hasn't been a big problem but recently, Loreto has a new x-ray machine. If you're flying through or out of Loreto, they are not allowing you to bring reels with line on them as carry-on luggage...or duct tape! I heard about this from one of the clients who was told that TASA in Los Angeles had told Loreto to do this. I called TASA and they knew nothing about it. Well, a few days ago, I flew through Loreto and they asked everyone about fishing reels and anglers had to remove them and put them into regular cargo, even though TASA at LAX had no problem. Just a heads-up. I don't know if this is happening in Cabo, as I've not been able to get anyone on the phone.

BOOKINGS FOR 2006

Here's a few things coming up you may want to think about:

WHALE WATCHING - We're starting to book up for whale watching at Mag Bay for January to February of 2006. A once-in-a-lifetime experience as these great creature will often come right up to the panga! Best time is February when the females and calfs are less nervous about the pangas and can get quite friendly. Price is $140 per person and includes hotel pickup, breakfast and seafood lunch, several hours of whale watching and return to your hotel. We can set it all up. Hotel rooms for two persons $100-130/night.

CABIN FEVER CLASSIC - We sell out every year. Our annual Cabin Fever Classic will be held March 30 to April 3. We're putting everyone up this year at La Concha Beach Resort on the beach. We have a blast every year. This is not a competition. It's just a fun group of folks who get together every year to get out on the water after too many months stuff in their cabins! We eat tacos and do some fishing. Last year we got close to 20 different species of fish. Two or 3 days of fishing available. Three days of fishing is $600 per person double occupancy and includes 4 nights hotel/ 3 days panga fishing Las Arenas/ La Pas airport pickups/ skipper/ tackle/ ice/ fish cleaning'/breakfast, lunch, soft drinks on fishing days/ taco night feed/ all taxes. Book soon. We sold out last year. Couples and first timers welcome!

SAVINGS for 2006 If you're planning to come down and play with us in 2006, I am offering 2005 prices if you book before Dec. 31. As you know, gas prices have affected everyone and prices are jumping for everything. No one is getting richer except the gas companies. However, if you book early with $100 non-refundable deposit per person, we'll give you 2006 prices. Not good with any other discounts. Just a heads up...some dates for 2006 are already booked, filling up or closing out...especially on condo units or suites. So, you may want to jump on this, especially if you have a certain skipper in mind.

Wayne picked up a nice tuna that hit the sashime plate that night. Wayne got this not far off Punta Perrico.

Pretty typical of our dorado right now. Not big. Not small. Just great eating.

Brian Higgins of Mission Viejo made his first trip to La Paz and hung this nice bull fishing the La Paz side.

That's my story!
