TUNA ARE TRYING BUT DORADO WON'T GIVE UP THE SPOTLIGHT - FIRST PERSON REPORTS - PHOTO GALLERY - PHOTO OF THE WEEK
DORADO STILL BENDING RODS FOR LAS ARENAS BOATS
Las Arenas is grudgingly giving us a few more tuna off the lighthouse with a smattering of dorado, pargo and those great giant squid. However, the best fishing continues to be for our boats fishing from La Paz. Dorado are on a roll with limits as the rule rather than the exception and larger bull dorado more prevailant.
It seems the body of big squid has moved a bit south to an area outside of Muertos, but the school or tuna is still in place right there off the Arenas lighthouse. Again, those tuna are incredibly close to shore and there's no doubt the footballs are there. The problem has been getting the chunked squid through the foaming bonito that are just faster, bigger and more agressive. There's no shortage of action. It's just that the quality stuff is below the "fun stuff." Below the bonito, are the tuna. Below those guy are the pargo. We did find a spot of marlin at the south end of Cerralvo and there might be a jag of nicer dorado around the buoys in Ventana, but until that develops, it's still a bit of a pick bite for Arenas.
By comparison, it seems that as long as the weather and winds hold out, so will the dorado. Bigger dorado including some nice bulls pace the fishing for our La Paz boats. Some days the boats do so well and get so thick into the school that our skippers are having to pull the anglers off the spot to keep it from getting out've hand or start releasing more fish. On top if it, just really pretty conditions right now and a pleasant time to be fishing with air temps in the low 80's and water in the low 80's.

FIRST PERSON REPORTS
John Drucker from Watsonville, Oregon, came down with his buddy Katsu Suzuki (see photo below)
"...fishing the first day was pretty tough. we fished with Jorge out of Las Arenas. we got our squid pretty quickly (the first time for me and what an experience- brought some home and pretty sure it will be pretty tasty. anyway that was pretty much the excitement for the day. we caught a couple of very small (rainbow trout size) dorado, a few needlefish and 2 pretty good size bonito (we all though we finally had our tuna). that was about it. the next day we fished La Paz with Marcos and did much better. we caught so many dorado we lost count. we hit an area that had fish everywhere. we lost track of time but for at least 40 minutes we had 3 and maybe 4 fish on at once. as we were fighting our fish Marcos was hooking up another. all were pretty decent size as well. great fun. Katsu had a great time (first time for this kind of fishing) and he's talking about how to go again (trying to get him for the Cabin Fever Classic). anyway we had a great time and appreciate all the arrangements and hard work. rgds-jd

I have to thank you for all the hard work you put into our holiday. Not only did you organize some great fishing, but the personal touch with arranging everything was beyond our expectations.
The fishing we had was first class, we caught many yellow fin tuna, dorado, giant squid (which are the scariest things in the ocean) and a awesome pargo. Jorge went completely out of his way both days we fished with him, running around finding bait, trying different areas and taking the time to do some fly casting, when our cooler ws full and the tuna were still biting. He was very professional and communicated well even though our Spanish is extremely limited. I would fish with him anytime.
Even though I fish for a living on the British Columbia Coast, I love comming down to cook myself in the sun, spend time with great people and catch all the great species you have to offer...
After leaving La Paz we got stuck in Hurrican Otis for a few days in Cabo, which didn't leave us time to do the exploring we wanted to do north of La Paz, but when we returned to La Paz, you welcomed us back to enjoy the rest of our trip.
Thanks again for putting up with us!
