wahoo techniques

I'll be in Loreto in about 10 days and it looks like some Wahoo are popping up in the reports. This is the one salt water fish that I have always wanted to catch and has eluded me. What is the best way to catch these things from a small boat? Trolling? What speed? What jigs? Marauders? Rapalas? Colors? On the surface? Down deeper? Any info is appreciated.

My only experience is from the Sportboats, I would try draggin a couple muarders in Black and Purple. Close to the boat, if I am in one of the corners I can usually see it. You will ned to troll a little faster than lets say Albies. I have seen the big spinners work also and I think Greg just got a few panga skinnies using a b&P rapala. Good Luck

BTW When are you going? You are welcome to barrow mine if I'm not fishing

Rapala, yozuri, or maurader, trolled at high speed (10 knots or more) way, way back from the boat. Troll along the edges of bait balls, working fish or bird schools. I recommend black and Purple, it was the only game in town for wahoo Sat-Monday
BTW you need a pretty stought stick, something with good drag pressure too, keeping a constant pressure on these guys is a must. Once they are able to shake their head , they are gone in the blink of an eye.

Thanks guys. So I get a troll way back and troll short vote? Maybe try one of each?

Off the hook, thanks for the insight. You east coast guys use some interesting techniques. No offense, but I think I'd get laughed out of town if I busted out all the planer boards and stuff. Not to say it wouldn't work, just different.

Somebody makes a lure called the "wahoo bomb" that I've heard guys say is pretty successful .... other than that, marauders are usually pretty hot .... I like purple. Good luck!!

Diving plugs are the go to for trolling for Wahoo's. Marauder type being the most popular in purple/black or orange/black, they shake really hard. I would wire them for sure they are not cheap. Wahoo are attracted to the prop wash, literally the prop wash. From LR boat its common to be 40 feet back. Seems pretty close but trust me they come right to the prop wash and like it, maybe closer on cruiser Iam not sure or maybe farther.. A boat line for Wahoo dinner is trolled closer then 40 feet. Given this is LR Wahoo trolling but I don't see how it could be much different. Some like the smaller model better as they think the Wahoo gets the jig/hooks better in their mouth. Single hooks swiveled. Swivel important so Wahoo does not get leverage to diss the jig. If you find a old Marauder it might not be swiveled.

Some troll the large Catchy Spinner or Marlin Jigs ect which do get bit. But they do not get the jig in their mouth as well as the jig is not running deep and is on or near the surface. At least the marlin jigs for sure too much splash and they just don't get the hook real good. So if you are targeting Wahoo troll the plugs.

Casting jigs to them. Raider's and Catchy 33's are good casting Hoo jigs along with many others. Single hook and make sure that hook is super ultra sharp. Wahoo mouth extremely hard and boney. I don't use wire and straight tie. If the Wahoo have not been getting allot of pressure you can get bit good still on wire but if they are getting hammered straight tie is the way to go. Wahoo bombs must be wired and most come wired. I don't hear of people fishing the slide on Wahoo strikes often on Cruisers I would have my jig ready with 50# high speed reel sink it out some. Wind like crazy. If possible straight wind the fish back without pumping or dropping rod tip. Very important to keep winding through the bite. When they grab it allot of times they do not have the hook even if they take allot of line. If you don't keep tight pressure and the jig has not SLID into the corner of the mouth they will just drop it. 1 for 5 on Wahoo casting jigs you are doing fine. I have a few jigs thrashed and none of the fish ever hit the deck. Its actually pretty fucked up.
