Mag Bay Report - November 3

I fished out of Lopez Mateos yesterday and the day before on the ridge north of Thetis Bank about 70 miles to the Uncle Sam Bank, spending the night Sunday drifting at Uncle Sam before a steady 8 knot breeze. I fished with Ron Bietelspacher on Sonrisa and Barry Wilkerson on Rocket, both from Loreto and both also fishing solo as I was aboard Soledad. On Sunday I got my limit of 5 wahoo early before catching up with Ron and Barry who beat me to the high spots at the Uncle Sam. Action was slow at the Uncle Sam Sunday and nonexistent at first light yesterday. We headed on down the line after an hour or so of nothing and found fish at the 23's. I had my second day's limit aboard before noon and headed back to the boca. With 10 hoos aboard and only half on ice I did not stop to try for tuna on the way in, although I'm sure that I ran through fish. The only fish I caught other than the wahoo was a single yellowfin about 20# that hit a fast trolled YZ Bonita. I again saw no marlin on the two day trip. Barry on his first trip on the big water since recovering from a late summer broken leg scored 3 hoos over the two day trip, and Ron 2.
The pocket long range boat Success out of Lopez Mateos was with us on various high spots on both days. The only other sportfishing boats I saw were Manfred Aistrich's Parker CC out of Nopolo at the 23's Sunday, and Mag Bay Outfitter's Mar Gato trolling for tuna outside the boca yesterday. There was chatter on the radio from others fishing further south.
I saw no diving birds, except over wahoo chasing barrilete, or baitballs on the trip. The surface water temperature was 79 - 80 degrees outside where I was fishing and the water was clear and blue.
Attached are photos of:
A couple of hoos at the boat sporting the most prolific lures I used, an old YZ Bonita that has scored at least 30 hoos and was once orange and black, and a brand new BigBite wahoo lure bigbiteoffshore.com rigged over 2 squid skirts and a 4 oz. slider that has found its way into the rotation.
Barry Wilkerson showing off a nice wahoo Sunday.
Barry showing good single handing technique on another yesterday.
An old relic of a seiner that a flock of frigates found suitable for hitching a ride.

Just cancelled our Mag trip...gonna stay in PV and fish around there instead since the reports are so slow. Hopefully things start happening there soon.

I used lures trolling for wahoo and didn't try to make bait. Ron and Barry got some lisas (mullet) netted in the river at Lopez Mateos.

Thanks
The Tony Reyes just arrived in Mag Bay. I will be going there a week from Sunday the 15th. Our group is a little nervous about the current fishing conditions.
