| Mag Bay Report - October 29
I trailered my boat Soledad across the peninsula from Loreto Sunday, launched at Puerto Lopez Mateos, and fished Monday and Tuesday on the Pacific outside Mag Bay. There were enough boats at the ramp Monday morning, including Mag Bay Outfitters boats and a healthy contingent from Loreto, to cause a minor traffic jam. The conditions were bumpy enough outside to keep most of the boats close to the boca mining the schools of small yellowfin and dorado in 130 - 270' water. I ran directly to Thetis Bank along with Ron Beitelspacher and Rod Dees on Ron's boat Sonrisa. In slow pickin's at Thetis I caught 3 wahoo and Rod and Ron on Sonrisa 2 before we moved on looking for yellowfin. Limits of football yellowfin and small dorado were available for everybody. I anchored Monday night at Bahia Santa Maria along with Sonrisa after dropping off a couple of hoos at the Mag Bay Tours surf camp. At first light Tuesday we were back at Thetis. We found nobody home, however, and after working the area for a couple of hours for nada we made our way back toward the boca where the yellowfin and dorado were holding forth. I searched in vain for a school of bigger tuna and ended up catching 15 or 20 that averaged 10 - 12 pounds with none bigger than 20#. The dorado were about the same size. I saw no marlin either day.
When we got back to the dock Tuesday afternoon there were representatives of one of the alphabet government enforcement agencies on hand along with the Port Captain checking licenses and catches.
I took no pics this trip because I did not want to risk the camera in the spray.

Bill thanks for the report. Do you know how the road into San Carlos is right now? Also was there any bait to be made in Santa Maria Bay?

Jason.......I have not been to San Carlos since the storm, but I'm sure the road is fine. The gas dock has apparently been in operation for the past couple of weeks. I did not try to jig up bait at Bahia Santa Maria, but did try out some new underwater lights and they did not raise anything. Others were complaining that there was no bait to be had in the bay.

Thanks Bill for the report. I'm an underwater photographer going down to join Bob on the island next week. I'm looking for opportunities to shoot tuna and dorado underwater. Was the water where you were catching them clear or green? I gather you saw no bird action or surface bait on the bank? Thanks again.
Cheers
Marc

Marc......Earlier in the week the yellowfin and dorado were concentrated within 5 - 10 miles of the boca in green water. further out, around Thetis, the water was blue. I saw no baitballs anyplace that would attract fish and provide for a good photo op. I am leaving in a few minutes to tow my boat across and fish tomorrow and Monday. If you remind me later I will give you a more current report. The weather forecast is for much calmer conditions for the next few days than was the case on my last trip.

Nice job with the 3 wahoo. We fished the Thetis on Tuesday as well for nada. Going strictly for wahoo on marauders and jetheads. Tons of tuna to 20 lbs under porpoise north of Punta Tosco along the beach. Dorado bit anything and were healthy up to 40 lbs. Picked up a couple hoo's way north near Turtle bay two days later. Weather was great!!

Been hearing about the bait situation, and slow fishing so far in the fall for Mag Bay. Hoping for better results soon, expecting to be down there the second week in Nov.

I'll be with 2 other boats and we expect to be on the water for 4 to 6 days. Are you still using the old ramp at the Flying Sportsman?

I live near it, but launch in Loreto at the ramp in el centro. The new ramp in Lopez is on the "river" in town west of the split.
