San Quintin 9/16 - 9/20

Quick report here, and fulfilling a promise to our guide Genaro (Chiflo) so he can "right click" to get pics of some of the outstanding fish we caught.

Synopsis: 3 days of fishing with Tiburon's son, Chiflo, on both the Marinero (very fast panga) and Cucajuan. WSB weren't cooperating, and the thresher bite died down, although someone (a day before) caught a 180lb Sword offshore. Yellowtail were in full effect at the 240 (morning bite), 15, and 6. I even managed to pull a few Yellowtail on a simple leadhead and dead squid (on the drop and on a quick retrieve upwards)! Ben's rock had good Yellowtail fishing too and makos lingering around looking for free meals.

The Yellowtail weren't terribly big at the 240 the days we were there, but they were actively feeding so we caught plenty. A little bigger at the 15 (saw some sporties there working it too). Key was to make small bait. One of the mornings we went over to the north side of San Martin to goof around. Caught assorted bottom fish and a few bonito/cuda, and a stray Yellowtail (we were halibutting).

Here's the highlight pics of the trip. Thanks a million Genaro for the quality service, great boats and tons of laughs. Your mom is one helluva great cook!

My friend's 30lber, 3rd time fishing, using naked Kroc 20 yards off the side of the boat (possibly his best cast of the day!). His first WSB. Priceless.

Can't wait till this gets fixed up!

Complimentary sashimi at Tiburon's each day you go out with them. Nice.

Chiflo with a 9lber and 11lber. A best for me.

Out of small bait, so I pinned a huge mack right and lobbed it right at the rock (240 breakers)....got b-holed quick, thought it was a rat yellow tail again. Nope. 11lb Calico! Wasn't expecting that...

* Speaks fluent english, great service, and the boats run well and fast w/electronics. Fillet service is excellent too (fillets get clean salt water wash down in ice, rods and reels get freshwater wash down etc...)

Awesome report! Love the TOAD calico! I wrote a story about fishing in San Quintin last year in Pacific Coast. It was wide open and I needed someone to catch fish so I could yake pics, but it was hard to find someone to go; I ended up calling it "The Last Angler in the World".

Thanks!

Just read your article....really nicely done!

I saw the picture of the guy filleting the fish (El Pinguino)....if he only knew his pic was in a well circulated magazine it would blow his mind! He's one funny dude, and in fact, we had some beers together just a couple days ago. !

Great report!
It's a shame that the photos don't do that 11 lb calico any justice...

Hey Marita!

I walked over one of the afternoons to the office but I didn't see you around. Karaoke at El Alteno is not the same without you...and your compatriotas!! By the way, what was the deal with the high school age campers all over the place? They were still up partying at 5:00 AM !!!

As far as going back, another group of friends are kicking over some dates and times, so I'm not exactly sure. In any event, you know me, I'm there on an average of once a month.

Take care,

Sansou
