Big Roosters Invade Cabo area

We got into some trophy roosterfish early last week on renegademike right in front of the Cabo Real hotel between Chilino and Red Hill. We were in around 80 to 90 ft a little ways off the beach. The smaller grade fish were in front of the presidente hotel off ffice:smarttags" />Click the image to open in full size.San Jose . Water temps were around 76 to 78deg We have been getting lots of 8 to 15 lb fish all month but these guys showed up and put on a show for a few days. Man what a beautiful fish these big roosters are. All these fish were released in good shape. fficeffice" />

Anybody coming down and fishing these big roosters make sure you tell your captain you want to release these fish. The bigger roosters sometimes need special attention in getting them to swim away in good shape. I have heard reports where some of these panga guys will say the fish is going to die and stick a gaff in them. They may look like they are dying but if you spend the time to swim them back to health next to the boat they will recover. They get exhausted after a long fight but I have spent up to a half hour on some fish and eventually they wake there ass up and swim away. They are one tough fish. Tell these idiots that want top kill them you will not tip them if they kill a fish you want released. We use a thin sharp hand gaff and we stick them in the lower jaw and carefully lift them in the boat.

Fishing with us the first day were Click the image to open in full size.Robby Bott, Ryan Bott, Stephen Smith, and Andrew Epperson from Texas.
Then the next day we had Kevin aka SocalKev and some of his family and we got into some 40plus lbers and we lost a few that might of went bigger. Hey Kev show off some of your pics I didn’t get any of your fish.
We have had some very strong winds here in cabo the last week and the water temps dropped some but its looking like this week things will settle down some.

Here is Stephen Smith,, his fish weighed 60lbs on a shimano 100lb spring scale

this guy Ryan Bott is 6'4 270lbs his fish weighed 62 lbs on a shimano 100lb spring scale

Like he said, Mike took us to the chicken ranch. These things pull hard and chase the bait on the surface, makes for fun, fast fishing. Mike and his crew are the best anybody going to Cabo should look him up.

Great day on the water. I was under the impression that rooster fish were not good eating.... Is that incorrect?

They are excellent eating - last time in Cabo I kept one small rooster and brought it to the local grill - it was excellent!

Nice job but on the roosters. If you like the taste of rooster I woulod suggest eating yellowtail or tuna, afterwards I doubt you would eat rooster again.

Rooster is not good eating. I bet that the meal that was served was something else and they used the rooster for fertilizer.

Don't kill roosters that's worse than killing marlin.

If you check the pic's, you can see the gaffed roosters were on a panga not on RenegadeMike, no reason to gaff em if you don't eat em.

Roosters taste like hell. Stupid to kill'em. Let them fight another day. Take a pic and let them get big!
