Yes, it's that time of year again. Conditions are perfect - warm water, great weather, calm wind. We made the run out on Tuesday with two boats. It was an easy ride with very little swell to deal with. Started trolling about three miles off one of my favorite marks.
First up was nice dorado that managed to get away. Next up was a nice Yellow Fin Tuna, maybe 30 pounds that we boated quickly and moved on. After that we had a slow period with a couple of heavy knock downs that came unpinned. The other boat was diving and managed to spear two nice wahoo in short order - nice work Nate! We trolled around for a bit more with another tuna here and a dorado there when the Independence pulled up - looks they were having some luck as well. The tuna stated to pile up about a mile off the pinnacle so we moved over to check them out when we got hit - yeah, the first wahoo!
Got a call from the other boat, yes, Nate scored another one! We trolled back toward the tuna again and, wham, another wahoo! When we got this one close to the boat four more swam right by, they were all over the place. We pulled around again and, sure enough, another one takes the marauder. That red and black mega-bait was a good investment, it was the hot lure of the day.
Ended the day with seven wahoo, four tuna, and three dorado. None of them huge - 25 to 40 pounds - but not a bad day. Nate got his limit of wahoo with his spear - tremendous effort from a great waterman!
Gotta love this time of year!
