Hey anyone driving down to east cape 8-30-08 thru 9-5-08?
I need some information if anyone has any.

we have driven this many many times just need a refresher and trying to avoid stopping in TJ.

1. CAN YOU GET TOURISTA CARDS IN SAN DIEGO PRIOR TO THE TRIP? IF SO WHERE?

2. CAN YOU EXCHANGE DOLLARS FOR PESOS AT A GOOD RATE ON THIS SIDE OF THE BOARDER? IF SO WHERE?

3. ANYONE DRIVING DOWN AT THAT SAME TIME AND WOULD LIKE TO TAG TEAM IT VIA CELL OR RADIO?

4. ANYONE WITH ROAD OR CONDITIONS IN GENERAL AND WOULD BE WILLING TO SHARE INFO?

5. ANYONE LIVING DOWN IN EAST CAPE AND IN NEED OF SUPPLIES FROM THE STATES PLEASE IM ME OR EMAIL ME AT TISSIE2@YAHOO.COM WITH MEXICO IN THE SUBJECT. WE WILL GLADLY BRING THE STUFF TO PALMAS AND MEET UP.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ALL THE INFO AND HELP.
GOD BLESS…..

Tourist Visas are available at the TJ border. When you cross be in the far right lane and pull into the declarations parking lot. Just ignore the declarations and park your car. Depending on time of day you'll go to one of two places, ask at the bank. So go to the visas office for visa paperwork ( not complete), then go pay at the bank, last go back to visa office and get stamped.

The roads are fine just take your time and remember that this beautiful drive has changed many lives for the better. It is one of my favorite things in the whole world. I typically take a road SW from San Ignacio to my home away from home and in doing so I skip the amazing East Cape and all the beautiful bays.

I would strongly suggest buying a Baja road book. Reading the book will teach you all the history of the many towns, give alternate side trips (ie cave paintings documented by Harry Crosby), and all in all make your journey way more enjoyable.

FAT CAT saw it!

The question about road conditions is best answered at the Baja club: Vagabundos del Mar. Anyone that makes frequent trips to Baja should join. It's the easiest way to get current road conditions as well as all other info about what's happening. It's also much easier to get your fishing licenses through them than to try and buy one down here.

I can't help with the other questions though.

Tackle Shop next to Sundance Marine might have Tourist Card info, I also need them
Pesos, maybe at border??????
I drove to Mulege last August & road was smooth all the way, except prior to Ensenada & one area b4 Guerro Negro, which they were paving.
We had no problems
Good Luck, Nathan

I just got back from a
cabo drive and the road is in fair to good condition. There is a spot between c.constitution and santa Rosalita where they are paving be prepared for fresh tar and loose gravel. There are a few bridges being worked on and detours are there. But over all a good drive. Ive driven down to Cabo 6 times in the last few years and have driven down since the 70s. Just be aware of no shoulders on many sections and very few gaurd rails. I get my Mex. auto insurance and travel visas throu Discover Baja. All I have to do is get the Travel cards stamped in T.J. on the way down. As far as Pesos I stop at a Cajero or Atm and get Pesos that way. The charge is like 75 cents a transaction and you can get up to 5ooo pesos at a time. Good Luck. Chris

The best way to get pesos is through an ATM in Mexico.

I've driven down and back every year and the highway is fine; the only time you need to worry is after a tropical storm, and so far this year there haven't been any. But now's the season so check the weather reports.

Don't forget that if you are bringing things down you will have to declare them at the border entering Mexico, 3 bottles of booze per person max , no clothes donation only clothing you expect to wear. I pulled in T.J. this June to get my tourist card and declare items 2 cases of wine for me and a bunch of clothing for the locals in my area only too get turned around and sent back to the U.S. couldn't even dump the wine no way all this after driving for about 8 hrs. from the bay-area. And they where stopping more vehicles than usal that where not declaring checking the trunks and cabs. Be very careful if you don't declare you are at their mercy, all that happened to me is they sent me back I gave the clothing to a 2nd hand shop along with the wine kept 3 bottles and re-crossed, I would check on the limits of what you can bring in. Also resupplied my wine stock at Costco in Ensanada.
