The Pro EXW30/2, which I think replaced this reel, is somewhat similar inside. The disassembly of the spool axle is different, and it was not immediately obvious to me how to do it. Therefore, I did not dismantle the spool. The bellvilles are like a Penn 50VSW. There are two (not four), and they are located between the spool axle and the right faceplate bearing.

Alan,
Do you think the Ex4/0-2 (serviced your way) is superior to a pro 30? I bought one, gonna do your rebuild, thinking of taking a long trip, fish it for cows. I also have a 30 and an SDS, and two 50WLRS Shimanos. I dont necessarily need the reel, but if your saying its nails i will fish it. This one has never had line on it, only out of the box for five minutes. virgin for sure.

Great info on the rebuild. Is there any way to get rid of the "clicking" noise on retrive and make silent like my other Avets?

Allen,
I used your tutorial for good advice. I used small washers I made on the long pins as they got a little more drag and took out the three springs to get max drag. I want reel for trolling and the springs are only for smoother casting. I saved $290 over the exw 30/02, and it was new in the box!!
Thanks a lot Jim

Thanks a lot Jim | I did get maximun drag by putting the small washers on pins, but I found out I also lost free spool, so went back to your suggestion of putting on the smaller pins. duh!!!

Do this reel have any weakness' that stand out? Im gonna open this reel for the first time and for sure im going with greased carbontex, but my question is do I swap out the stock bearings for something a bit "better" ? My offshore gear only see's a few outing a year and if I could swap bearings now and never have to worry about them again Im gonna do it. If you suggest I swap out the bearings what do I replace them with?
