It probably has some of that red assembly lube on the spool shaft bearings or the spool shaft itself. If it were my reel, I would pull the shields off the spool shaft bearings, clean them with carb cleaner and oil them with Black Market or ReelX and a drop of Xtream Reel+. My MXL exceeds 3 minutes of freespool. That's kind of rediculous so I put ReelX to slow it down and prevent corrosion.

thanks | I would send it right back to the business you bought it from and have them send you a new reel that works. Let them deal with Avet. I'm guessing you bought it through the internet.

It could simply be that there is some grease between the spool and sideplate. Remove the right sideplate (it takes just three screws) and spin the spool outside the frame. If it spins well, then most likely all you need to do is wipe down the spool and frame. If it does not spin well, take your reel back to the seller.

If you don't work on your own reels send it back. It should be right when it leaves the factory.
Sometimes they get bounced just right in shipping, I had an HX do the same thing, but it spun for like 20 seconds and came to a hard stop, the stop will tell you a lot about what's wrong. I just took the side plate off and put it back on, then it was fine.

I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM,NEW MXJ.HAD GREAT FREESPOOL BEFORE I DISSASSEMBLED IT TO GREASE THE DRAG WASHER.PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND NOTICED NO MORE FREE SPOOL,JUST LIKE I HAD THE PRESET KNOB LOCKED RIGHT DOWN OR IT IS IN LIVE BAIT SETTING.I NOTICED THOUGH THAT WHEN I HAD THE PRESET SET WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AND PRESS DOWN ON THE TOP OF THE PRESET KNOB,I GOT FREE SPOOL AGAIN.,I MADE SURE THAT THE LEVER WAS FULLY IN FREESPOOL,BEFORE DISSASSEMBLY. I CHECKED THE SCHEMATICS AND IT APPEARS EVERYTHING IS THERE. ANY IDEAS? THANKS MARCUS

Marcy in the future when ever you take a reel apart use a digital camera and take photos. I have done that with all my Avets, Shimanos, Diawas and Penns over the years and it has saved me from many headaches and worries prior to any of my fishing trips. Good luck in the future with your reel maintance.
