State Water Snapper trip out of Port-A Texas

There is a group of guys in the Corpus Christi area that all get together to have breakfast every saturday and occasional sundays to tell fishing lies.

Well, at breakfast, one of the guys decides he wants to take his boat out for a Wednesday (12/5/07) state water snapper trip and I am fortunate enough to get invited.

Of course being the typical fisherman, we immediately want to bring out the big guns to go plinking, so the night before, I had decided on taking my JX4.1:1 and my EXW4/02 (both of which are blue), but then I realized that the rod I have my EXW4/02 on is at my bud's house getting a new reel seat mounted, so I think no big deal, I'll just take my wife's Purple EW4/02 on its matching rod...

So I shoot off an email to the guy's im going fishing with about what tackle im bringing, and mentioned to them not to make fun of me for bringing along my wife's purple EX4/02 since mine is out of commision because of rod work. My wife has a Purple SX, Purple EX4/02 and Purple LX (at least I told her I bought them for her and everytime I get to take her fishing I bring them and tell her that they are hers )

I get an e-mail back that states:

"You are not fishing on my boat with a purple Avet unless you are wearing a TuTu!"

so I was like, hell, I may have crossdressed a few times for Halloween, but I dont feel like crossdressing just to go fishing, so I put my EXW4/02 on a crappy boat rod that I keep around for a backup.

This was my first trip out with my JX, I just got it spooled with Momoi 65lb Blue Braid and since the custom rod I ordered has yet to show, I borrowed a Trevala to fish with it for the day.

We cleared the jetties and were greeted by BEAUTIFUL conditions for december in the Gulf of Mexico and made it to the secret snapper spot i've never been to shortly thereafter, we caught a 3 man limit and had a blast.

Avet mxl with 30lb mono on a seeker inshore series rod, Eds homemade jig.
We finally had some nice weather after suffering a couple of weeks of poor conditions, wind and swell have been horendous lately. After seeng such a nice forecast for the weekend I, decided to take my stepson and a friend to Catalina Island. We started for the island around 6am in absolutely beautiful conditions. When we arrived at the island, we started the chilly morning trying to catch halibut with no success. Decided it would be best to explore the island around and jig for rockfish. It was now warming outside like a summer day, I found some really nice structure on the backside of the island that was full of chuckleheads. They were all nice quality, but Brian brought in this beautiful chuckle (copper rockfish) after some serious grinding (he is 9). By the way, all fish wer caught on (Eds) famous jigs.
We stayed late and dropped the hoopnets for limits of bugs also. About 20 hours on the water, but another fantastic day at the island.

I caught this 11lb goat at catalina today 12/16/07 while fishing with Chevypickle (Chuck) on my boat. The fish was caught in 170' of water using a custom wrapped GUSA rod (wrapped by me) and an Avet MXL loaded with 25lb mono. 6 Oz. of weight and an Owner 6/0 gorilla hook!!!

Been a while since i have been able to fish so this made the trip even sweeter!!!

Thanks

Here is a picture i took of my boat while washing it after the trip. I thought it came out pretty cool!!!

Re: Dec Avet Contest!

When Marika Anderson first started fishing for these big yellowtail off of San Marcos Island in Baja Mexico, she thought it was impossible that a fishing reel could cost over $100. She finally settled on a Shimano Tekota since it had levelwind and would handle 50 lb line which was the minimum that on could use and stand a fighting chance of keeping these forkies from taking you into the rocks, which they do so well. Last year she tore out the anti-reverse pawls and she sent the reel to the factory to have it rebuilt but on one of the first big (over 30 lb.) fish of this season, the reverse pawls blew again. When discussing her woes with a friend, he said that should not be a problem and he lent her a JX two-speed Avet. After finding out how she did not really need a level wind and that the reel would really winch those big monsters off of the bottom in low gear, she managed to land quite a few fish with the borrowed JX.
San Marcos Mike was headed to the United States to do some business and said if she would order a reel, he would make sure he brought it back down for her. Well she ordered it (with not much comment about the price) from our friends at Charkbait, who spooled the little reel with 80 lb. Jerry Brown Spectra and 60 lb. Trilene Big Game topshot. The guys at Charkbait called to make sure that was the way she really wanted the reel configured since it is a little out of the normal pattern, but here it is necessary to have a very short tug of war with these fish and capacity is not very important.
So she got her reel and she is all smiles and has put a serious dent in the yellowtail population. She has been looking at the new HX two-speed but that will be another story for next year. She does thank all the staff at Avet for making her job a lot easier than she ever dreamed possible.

Tetsu Hoshi

La Bocana, Baja Sur, Mexico
Avet MXJ with #20 P-Line CXX and an All-Star WCSI86H
December 18, 2007
My dad and I go down to Baja a lot. We typically fish out of La Bocana with Juanchy Aguilar, a local panguero, and his brother Joaquin, who cooks us dinner. I had been fishing with some generic custom rod with an new accurate 270 along side the MXJ.
This yellow ate a fly-lined mack with a 4/0 Owner Circle Mutu. it hit the scale at 22 something, but I don't think it's calibrated right. My 15lb weight scales at 12lb, so if that's to scale, it should be about 27lbs. The MXJ worked great, super smooth, and was fun to fish the light line with. If I had any complaints, it's that I need a new rod. It should have been evenly match to the all-star rod, which had a top-side of 25lb, but the reel just outperformed the rod.
Thanks for the reel guys, especially for helping me outfish my dad's trinidad.

Re: Dec Avet Contest!

Fished my AVEt 50 SDS ("out of the box") on the EXCEL 12-6-07 Mag Bay area. Slid a sardine on a 9/0 EC 2005 attached to 130LB Fluro. that was all it took for this Yellowfin of about 150lbs. He was no match for this tackle. Through out my entire trip I never felt under-gunned with my Avet 50 SDS nor was I concerned about line capacity, having loaded it with with 600 yds of 130JBH. Overall my 2 50SDS Avets hammered about 20 tuna to 190lbs. I was very comfortable at all times during the fights and the reels worked flawlessly. I should have brought more!
Thanks AVET

Yellowfin Tuna
Southern Baja
AVET JX6/3 :Calstar 700H
Dec.8,2007
A good friend insisted I take his J/X #40 outfit along aboard INTREPID.This fish is 1 of a pair of 90+class Tuna caught on a modest size kelp patty.
I had no idea Tuna hung around floating kelp. What a blast on the light stuff!!!!
Live sardines cast well away from the boat were bit almost instantley.5/0 Gorilla 4'flourocarbon laeder. My friend had given me a tip 4 hours earlier ,"hooking a bait in the back, for casting to boiling fish".No exageration,I walked up next to him and said,"well I'll try that trick you taught me";back hooked a sardine;cast and was bit in 3 seconds.Right next to him.It was really funny.
Harry and Sarkis can be really proud of their product.
Happy new Year
