Avet Reels Support Thread, HX or HXJ for surface Iron... in Spotlight; Is the HX or the HXJ suitable for surface iron?? I have a calstar T100 10' and want to throw ...
Jason,
I have the HX, regreased acording to Alan Tani and I can throw surface pretty far. I run 80#JB Hollow and put wind ons 50-60# according to taste. Its an awesome reel, lots of 2 speed power.

I have both reels and the HXJ is a much better reel for the surface iron while the HX is a much better reel for the yoyo. Have fished both on an 8 footer and the HXJ is so much eaiser to handle when casting because it is narrow. They come right out of the box with 20-22 lbs of drag at strike with great freespool which is far more than you need fishing 50-60lb. Go to your favorite tackle dealer and and see which feels best for you. Goodluck and good fishing.

I have handled a standard HX... I plan to use it with 40# line....
I have 1 HX with 65/50 and the other has 80/60 and are both first run reels that came with 28lbs of drag with great freespool while the second run of the HX reels and HXJ were tuned down to 20-22 lbs of drag with great freespool. I see your in OC and so am I so if you want to test the HXJ for casting Ill put it on a rod and go to one of the local lakes and let you throw and see the difference. I get back from Hawaii 12/9 let me know if your interested.
WHy the HX. Local stuff? WHy not LX or JX? 10' suggests you're not chasing giants.
I have both already and they work well... Most of it will be local and some at the Lupe etc... I love fishing surface iron and when fishing for bigger critters I'm thinking this will be better... When I hook a big yellow or a bigger Yellow Fin Tuna a low gear would be nice.. I have caught Yellow Fin Tuna to 100+ on my jig rods.....
