Question about the HX 2A

Are there more than one version of this reel? They have been called the Hoo X, and now the HX 2. Also, have read a lot of reports on this reel, but not any on how good it is on what it is designed for, WAHOO. Would like to know how the retrieve and cranking power is when you get stopped by a Hoo. Have Newell's 5.5 which work good, but not enough drag.
Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Question about the HX 2A

HX and HX 2 are the same thing (the 2 is to show that its a 2 speed reel). The retrieve ratio is somthing like 5.2:1 in high. The reel will have more than enough drag for wahoo from what i understand....just imagine a JX on Steroids

Re: Question about the HX 2A

The HX 5/2 is an excellent 50-60 lb reel, backed with 80 lb spectra on a recent Cedros trip I was able to straight grind 25 lb yellowtail to the boat on a 50 lb topshot while fishing the iron on the yoyo. The reel cast great and with close to 30 lbs of drag at full will kill most anything, including Wahoo. The reel is a tad big for wahoo and casting all day will take its toll. I love the reel but the JX with 65 lb spectra and a 40 or even 50 lb topshot will get the job done on the wahoo. Good luck and good fishing.

Re: Question about the HX 2A

It's actually the HX 5/2, and a wide version has been released. High gear is 5.4:1, low is 2.2:1. Retrieve is 46 inches per crank. I set the drag at 18# with 34# maximum. Holds 400 yards 80# hollow spectra, and 150 yards of 50# Ande. Identical size as Shimano Trinidad TN-40 [Narrow]. If I didn't have a JX 6/3, the HX would be my favorite wahoo jig reel, but the JX is a little better for cranking jigs all day.
