basic HX5/2 ?

I just purchased one of these reels and being fairly new to salt water fishing and not having an owners manual I want to make certain that I have the lever in the correct postion to set the drag.
From reading other posts I understand that 25% of the line test at strike is the way to go.

However

I am not certain exactly where the strike position is? I am assuming that I simply push the lever as far as it will go before having to push the button and lock it down. Is my assumption correct?

Thanks
Mike

Re: basic HX5/2 ?

Make sure when you set the drag, push the level down (free spool) then you can dial your desired drag pressure! and yes, that's the strike position!

Re: basic HX5/2 ?

To get it into freespool you must push the button on the lever drag. Strike position is all the way forward. To get it to full you must once again push the button on the lever drag.

Re: basic HX5/2 ?

Tang,
From your body toward water, there are 4 stops on your lever.
1st is the free spool position for casting.
2nd is bait but I never use it.
3rd is the STRIKE position.
4th is the full drag.
When we talk about 25 to 30% drag, it is for 3rd(STRIKE) position.
Just make sure to put the lever on 1st free spool position and dial in(or out) a couple of clicks and move the lever back to 3rd(STRIKE) position and measure the drag with scale.
Cast with 1st position until you have strikes and then play with 3rd position.
You can use full drag(4th position) when tuna goes down deep at the end of play.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Here's your "Manual", it's actually a schematic of a prototype, not the production version.

You can save it to your computer, and then print a copy. You can magnify and get a better look too.

Smile Re: basic HX5/2 ?

Thanks everyone the reel did just fine until I decided to back off the lever on a 120lb Tarpon. The captain did a great job of saving the day with some quick boat work giving me the time to fix the backlash. Nothing but operator error. The reel and a Choas Ultimate 15-50 worked out just fine. The stretch in the mono also played a factor in this story.
