Avet 30N question

Bought a NIB Avet Pro 30N at the Day at the Docks this year. For drag the Avet website is stating:
35 lb Max Drag on Strike with Free Spool.
Is this what I am supposed to get from Strike while still having freespool in the Bait position? Seems I am getting less then 15lbs with it starting to lose some spin at the Bait position. This has never been used on the water but has been spooled with spectra. Tried setting the drag using the methods described in another thread, but didnt see a huge improvement in settings.
Of course I didnt send in my warranty card so asking the board what you all think I should do. (note: not entertaining opinions about reselling it, I might be a internet fishermen but love my Avets) Not too comfy taking apart Avets yet so just wondering if I should send it in to get fixed.

Re: Avet 30N question

The bait position is not free spool. All the way down would put the reel into free spool. At bait there will be some drag tension.

Re: Avet 30N question

I understand that a little tension will be felt at that drag setting, will have to check when I get home to see how much tension I am getting. What's your drag set at, and how much tension is felt in the bait setting?

Re: Avet 30N question

I'm only running #60 on my Pro30 so I dragged mine (@strike) at #19.8 which is 1/3. Nowhere near the #35 you can get out of it. Now at Bait, there is some resistance, but that's part of the drag system. If you run #80 on it like my Pro30W you should look for #26.5. If you can't get this out of your reel, send it to AVET. For more help, search the AVET threads for dragging reels.

Re: Avet 30N question

My Pro 30 narrow holds 26-28 lbs of drag at strike with good freespool......I have 100 lb spectra and 80 lb topshot on mine.

Re: Avet 30N question

Ok just checked my 30, with a drag setting of about 20lbs, I am getting a Bait resistance of about 1.5lbs. Just wondering if this is about normal. Thanks everyone for your input.

Re: Avet 30N question

Sounds like you might be confused about the purpose of the Bait position. It's not the same as Freespool. Bait position is an adjustable drag position to put resistance on a freeswimming bait You can put the lever in Free, and turn the drag knob forward or back, to increase or decrease tension on your swimming bait, after you put it in Bait position. After you get it where you want it, you"ve changed your 20# at strike, so it's easier to use your thumb to put tension on your swimming bait.

Re: Avet 30N question

Okay. I know that bait(cast control) and free are completely different. I was just concerned as all my smaller Avets can get close to the stated max drag at strike while maintaining little to no resistance in the bait(cast control) setting, and with the 30N I was noticing a slowdown at around 15lbs drag at strike in the bait setting. Never tried turning up my drag high enough so resistance will be felt in the Free setting, but it seems logical that there shouldn't be any resistance no matter the drag setting while the lever is in free. Not saying that its not true, I just don't have any of my Avets to try this on.

Ok seeing is believing and went home and upped the drag on one of my other Avets. Didnt have a chance to measure how much drag it was pushing but Freespool (Lever in Free position) was affected. Sorry to doubt but this was something I needed to see myself.

Re: Avet 30N question

You want some resistance in the bait position. If a fish takes a bait and screams off line, and theres no resistance you can get a birds nest and that will screw up your line and you could lose the fish.

You did say that your smaller avets that you cant feel much resistance in the bait position. But im guessing this is your first 80lb+ reel. As long as when its in freespool and your not getting resistance then its fine.

Re: Avet 30N question

John you are correct in saying this is my first 80lb reel. Guess my mind was stuck in star mode when I was thinking about the resistance in freespool. Thanks everyone for making things clear to me. Cant wait to try her out.
