Angler Bouldernz
Fish a pair of Bluenose 1 20kg the other 13kg
420m deep 40 miles east of Great barrier Island Auckland New Zealand
10 minutes to drop and 35 minutes to wind back up

A plan was made to go wide looking for Bluenose Hapuka and Marlin so I took my new Avet 50wide for the deeper stuff and this was ny first result on the new gear. I was fishing on a 9m powercat running twin volvo,s with stern legs and the round trip was 204 Nautical miles.
The next drop a Orca deceided to steal one of the brace I had comming up and this left me hooked up to a three ton Piebald fish stealing Killer whale for over 15 minutes so I really got to see how much drag I could hold onto
Reel performed above my expectations and I cant wait to give it another bash at the three Kings a group of Island 50mile north of New Zealand next week. Target 100lb+ bass and huge Kingfish as well as any marlin that crosses my path

Gear: Avet MXJ 4.5 loaded with 20# Blue Izorline on a Seeker CLB 706 7ft. Custom Rod.
Date: Thursday April 26th, 2007

Story: Took the day off to hit the Old #7 with my best fishing buddy and my husband Bill. Headed out Wed night with hopes of finding the elusive ghosts.
I awoke to my husband and two others catching a few calicos. We spent about 2 hours soaking some fresh frozen squid until Jeff Marsillio (Capt) prepared breakfast.
Long about 7:30, I set up my 20# Avet (the MXJ) with a 3/4 oz slider and an owner 2/0. Pinned on a frozen squid and tossed in. No sooner did it sink than it was game on. I hammered down the drag as the fish was heading to the kelp quickly.
Got it turned and it immediately started the run right towards the boat. I quickly wind to keep the line tight, and the fish surfaces. Made a few runs past the stern and the gaff was sunk in this 33.8# beauty.
I loved my little Avet 2 speed so much that when my other (not an avet) reel that I use for 20# took a dump Bill bought me this little mxj to replace it.
This little reel made quick work of the White Seabass. It was the largest seabass caught by our group that day, and also the only one caught on 20# straight mono.

Anglers: Bob Williams and Josh Dickerson

118lb Cubera Snapper caught out of Charleston, SC. PENDING STATE RECORD, caught on an AVET Pro EX50/2 SDS. 51 lb Cubera Snapper (4th pic below) caught on Avet Pro EXW50/2.
Both fish are in the last picture!

Pretty rare for us to see cuberas in SC. In fact, the SC record slot for Cubera is empty.

We were overnighting on the ledge fishing sat-sun April 28-29. At approximately 11pm Josh Dickerson caught a 51lb cubera snapper on an AVET EX Pro 50W (4th pic). We weren't sure what the SC record was but figured we had a prety good shot at it. At approximately 2:30am sunday morning, Bob Williams hooked up what was thought to be a big shark or amberjack on his Avet EX50 SDS. When it got to the top it was a giant Cubera Snapper, alot bigger than the 51lber. It weighed in at 118lbs and is expected to be the SC state record Cubera Snapper pending approval this afternoon. We're hoping to get a few better pictures this afternoon when we go to finish the certification process.

We later found out that the fish is only 3lbs 8 oz shy of the all tackle world record.

Re: April '07 Avet Contest

Avet's getting it done on the White Seabass at Cat. West End.
4/28/07. 45 ft of water tight to the kelp.
Dan using a SX 5.0 on a Calstar 800XL with 20lb line. (37lb)

Me using a MXJ 6/4 on a 15 yr old custom wraped Calstar blank with 20lb.(47lb)

The drags on these reels are as smooth :pourit: as a cold one on a hot summer day. It's nice to whoop _ss on the light line and the right gear.

What the Hey.

04-29-07 Pacific Voyager at Todos Santos. JP fish and my first of the year.
MXJ 6/4 25 lb clear Ande. Burned some good drag but kept him out of the rocks. 8' Rogue Rod won on a BD Dominator Charter last year. Sweet set up.

Congrats again on both fish guys! 118# is 2# over the Florida all tackle record!!! Very rare and awesome catch for those hard fighters.
(doesn't this contest take the size of the particular species into account?)
Not to mention Bob displays his Avet sticker on his truck and already owns about a dozen Avets! .... what else can I say other than this is an UNREAL catch here on the right coast. Very well deserved by all aboard that night.

Re: April '07 Avet Contest

Awesome fish for sure but terrible pictures (w/ the Avet, as you can't even see the fish). Also, once you pull a cubera off the ledge, they are not that great of fight on a 50W.

Re: April '07 Avet Contest

If they aren't much of a fight then how come the Florida (where they are much more common) all tackle record is 116 lbs? The world record is only 3.5 lbs more than this as well.
I have caught a small one (20") and they do not give up once you get them off the bottom like a grouper does. They keep fighting the entire time.
I think it's quite a catch, and made possible by the smoothness of the drag and cranking power. He had to back off a few pounds to get it out of the rod holder while not letting the fish get back to the bottom or busting the rod. I bet this is a lost fish in 99% of the cases one has even been hooked.

this fish never got that memo,he fought his ass off except for the last 30-40 ft,he made 2-3 runs AT the boat and even more away, did the circle of death,he tried every trick that had kept him alive for 40 +years..

we have better pics from the next day...the originals were all taken after we had been up over 36 hrs,all we wanted was a shower and a bed..

Awesome catch for sure (not discounting the fish....just the fight once you get them off the bottom......I have caught many large ones)! 118 is a fish of a lifetime. What pound test?
