| Need a 2+ piece rod (for travel) for my SX I am taking a bareboat catamaran charter in the British Virgin Islands in May. I am taking a spinning outft and a conventional outfit. For the conventional outfit I plan on bringing my Avet SX and need a rod that is 2+ pieces. I have mostly used my SX for surf fishing, and some headboat bottom fishing. In the BVI I will be using this combo for trolling behind the sailboat, bottom fishing, etc. I don't want to spend over $150. Also, should I set this combo up with braid or mono? If I choose braid, what brand & pound test should I use? What about a topshot? Anyone have experience with seekers 7ft, 2 piece East Coast Conventional Rod or Compact Fishing Gears Steel Power Boat rod (4 piecs)? CompactFishingGear - STEELPOWER BOAT thanks |

If you ever fish the West Coast, consider your man card revoked.

Just my opinion: Shitcan the spinning rig, you're trolling or bottom fishing. Any number of fish in that neck of the woods will spool medium to heavy spinning rigs... Maybe then Dayle will review your Man Card revocation... You would be better off taking two conventional rigs in different line classes.
Seeker makes a great blank, usually they are fiberglass/graphite blends for durability as well as weight and sensitivity. St Croix or Star (all graphite, and popular on the east coast) will probably have an inexpensive two piece rod in that 7 or 7 and a half, 30lb class. Professionally fill the SX up with 50 or 65# braid of nearly any brand (again just my opinion) and take a few spools of fluorocarbon leader in 20, 30, and 40# test. You can reverse albright all sorts of shock leaders on to that reel. Good luck with that one.

I've been impressed with the 3 piece Penn travel rod I got about a year ago. They are sold though most of the internet sites; I believe I got my through Bass Pro.

Paralabrax - My travel spinning rod is actually the OM 7ft MHspinner and its worked great. What kind of reel/line did you use on it for the GT? AKSalmon - I have looked at Penn Pro Guide Travel as well. What kind of setup do you use; you think it can handle braid? |

I hate that max length crap. The only airline that has ever pulled that on me (while carrying my ghetto PVC tube up to the ticket counter) is Delta. Those no talent ass clowns wouldn't budge on a $100 fee. I had no choice but to pay a 100 fee to transport a $160 rod, or leave it on the curb... and NOT fish. I was livid.
I'm sure you've called the airline and asked... BTW, I own a handful of John's custom rods. He would know if that ferule is worth your attention.

Daiwa makes a HL-SS862XHFB its a 2 piece 8'6" rated for 15-50# cost about $60 .I took one to Costa Rica last summer with my SX loaded with 50# spectra .Caught roosters to 65# dog-tooth snapper to 45# on poppers worked great
